What a spirit those early aviators had...and to climb into an aircraft that many thought would break apart at Mach 1 and keep going. He flew into Mojave when I was out there with Burt Rutan and the two of them and Richard Branson sure did some flying that day! It was an honor!!!!! Being a little kid in Florida during the Apollo program, knowing cats like him were, "just up the coast", launching themselves into space on a regular basis made them seem like hometown heroes, accessible but no less larger than life.
