Down to the Wire

Greetings,

My name is Thomas Popp and I am a sound professional currently working in Los Angeles as a union member of I.A.T.S.E. 695. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of you on many different movies, TV shows, and commercials.

I’m writing to introduce my new book called Down to the Wire. The book goes through many tips, tricks, and advice on the ins and outs of wiring talent that only a professional working in hands-on situations can suggest. This is an interactive book available for iPad that not only teaches you set etiquette and basic sound principles, it also incorporates step by step videos teaching how to wire talent in many different wardrobes.

Down to the Wire is available in the iTunes book store and is compatible with all iPads. I am also looking into other formats of distribution which will allow the book so be offered in different formats (kindle, nook, etc.) as well as hardcover format.

I have been working on this book for two years, and it gives me great pleasure to advertise it here on JWSound first! I hope it helps anyone that wants to brush up on their skills or learn some new tricks will consider this book!

I think pretty much every single live newscast in every country of the world has a lav clipped on the lapel of the anchorman. And there is a way to do that right, and a way to do that wrong.

I have plenty of sound books that show me how to put a lavalier on with a tie clip. What makes this book so special, is my question.

I think this website and general experience are probably a better teacher.

EDIT:: The videos, though, I might like.

Did you watch the YouTube video in the original post? It obviously shows different wiring techniques when hiding lavs.

I own this book. Even though most of us here probably use the same techniques in the book, there are probably some neat little tidbits you'll pick up.

I have experience... maybe not 30 years like some people here, but man do I love reading sound books, even if it's stuff I already know about.

+1

I own many sound books as well. Probably get this one too...eventually. It doesn't actually need an iPad to run does it?

The thing is it heavily utilizes Apple's iBook authoring tool. Much of the book relies on the integration of images, interactive image galleries, and demo videos.

I'm not sure it would be as powerful conveying info in a hardcopy version... especially when explaining the mic'ing techniques.

Thank you all for the recommendations.

We are already looking into other ways to make this book happen without sacrificing the iPad feel of the book. Since no other product on the market has the ability to make a book that is interactive, it makes for a difficult way to streamline it for the end user.

Stay tuned for more!

I had the great pleasure of meeting Thomas Popp at lunch today at Paramount Studios on the NY Street set. He was working with a good friend of mine sound mixer Steve Bowerman on the set of NCSI. He showed me the Down to the Wire book on the iPad. Wow! looks great and is very interactive with many embedded videos as well as photos and text. Very impressed. Now all I need is a new iPad.

Love Tom's Lav Bullet! The book is really beautifully designed, and the graphics are dynamite on an iPad. I agree there are some techniques that might be shown better as a short video than as a diagram, but there are situations where a traditional book or PDF would broaden the potential market.

Thanks Marc!

Just keeping everyone updated: I am working hard on revising the book to work in kindle format as well as in hard copy form. I should have something done relatively soon.

The biggest issue once again is the fact that no other company besides apple allows for books that have as much interaction as this book has. Amazon has something new called Kindle Format 8, but I don't know too much about it. Anyone here have any experience with it?

I am pleased to announce that "Down to the Wire" is now available for the iOS platform as well!

We have been working very hard to make it the easiest and most practical interface since it will be viewed on smaller screens instead of an iPad. The experience is not the same, but is incredibly fast and very easy to navigate!

We plan on having the Android version (which will work on all android devices and tablets including Kindle Fire) in the next few weeks!

Thanks everyone for supporting the book, and it was awesome seeing everyone at NAB!

Hi Thomas, I bought the book too, and did quite enjoy it. What did really disappoint me, however, is the moment where the videos start. We see many really similar videos of someone putting a lav on someone else. The text mentions various techniques of wrapping the lav, but there us no video to go with that part. But to me that's the most interesting bit!
