swaneon
I have a marantz 661 + sd 302 and i find it cumbersome to connect both and my mic. At this point I'm thinking about getting a mix pre d since I can then mount it on my rig or more likely am looking to get a 702. Am I correct in thinking that the 702 should allow me to do what the recorder + 302 do--which is to record audio from 2 channels with a good preamp? thank you. Rick Reineke
Yes, sort of.. a more convenient and reliable setup.. but... the 702 is not a mixer. Would it sound better? Probably not audibly. If I had an extra $2k kicking around, I'd have one just to satisfy my insatiable appetite for gear.
VM
If I were you I would wait to buy a mixer-recorder such as 664, Maxx, Nomad or 4minx. And I would keep the SD302 plus the cheap recorder as a spare gear. A 702 is a good recorder but, except on easy jobs, you will miss the mixer. This is what I have done : I own a 788 but I have kept my 302.
Boomboom
...there's also two 552s for $2500 on consignment at Gotham and Trew, if that can help. If you're to buy a MixPre-D just for occasionnal addition of 2 channels, you might also consider the new ''RX Emergency 2''. Video here: http://www.trewaudio.com/audioflow/nab-2013-redding-audio-booth/ Lots of gear out there, lots of possibilities; go with your needs and good luck ! :-)
