Converting XDCam footage

Hey all.

So I was planning on editing the video that was shot at the Atlanta Sound Mixers gathering into stuff that people could see. I got the drives today. The footage was shot on a Sony XDCam (by Chris Mills...correct me if I'm wrong, Chris).

I do all my editing in Final Cut X. I can't even play the video back in Quicktime, and when I import the video into Final Cut, nothing plays.

Does anyone know of a quick and free way to convert this video? I don't have a lot of time to mess around with this. I was planning on just importing the video and chopping up each presentation as it's own file, throw an little intro/outro title, and export.

Right now I'm dead in the water, and we are really busy with work stuff, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.

Thanks!

-Dave

FOUND THESE AFTER A SEARCH...

Sony hires professional web designers who work under usability designers to make sure it is impossible for anyone to find anything on their website. My bet is you're looking at the USA site. I think Rubik designed it after he finished with the Rubik's Cube.

http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/
Look at Download . . . and you won't see it.
Click on View All in that frame
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads
and you'll see something cryptically called
NLE Editing and File Transfers
Click on that
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads.bbsccms-a...
and you'll see something written in Klingon
PDZ-KP1 Version 2.7
PDZ-KP1 is Klingon for Sony XDCAM File Transfer. The version number. 2.7 is also wrong.
Click on Click Here to Download Software.
It's very tiny to ensure no one over 40 can read it.
https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/sony-software.aspx?model=pdzkp1
You then find that PDZKP1 is described as
XDCAM Transfer Plug-In for Final Cut Pro (MAC). To the left of that you'll note that the Product Category is
Videotape Recorders
This is to let you know that you are downloading the Videotape Recorder for your tapeless camera.
Click on the Klingon PDZKP1 and it takes you to
https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/sony-software-model-PDZKP1.aspx
You'll see Kit Part Numbers which lets you know that there as many types of PDZP1 in Klingon as there are words for snow in Eskimo
Look for Kit Part Number FPDZKP1A2
The Kit Description will be
XDCAM XFER V2.10.0 XDCAMHD422
Which may well be a later version than 2.7 previously mentioned unless Klingon uses a different numbering system than found on most places on this planet.
Note how the Description includes XDCAMHD422 which is not XDCAMEX420 to discourage download if you've actually gotten this far.
Click on Download Now Free of Charge next to the above Kit Description and you will have the current version of XDCAM Transfer Software for Final Cut Pro and you don't even have to use it as a plugin even though they called it that a few pages back.

Of course if you have Snow Leopard you will likely discover a Thumbnail Cache bug which Sony neglects to mention and has not yet provided an update to fix.

Only people who were very good at those old computer puzzle solving adventure games like MYST can find Sony XDCAM Transfer 2.10.

You are now a member of a very small and select group who know were to find the current version of Sony XDCAM Transfer on the USA site. You can not tell anyone unless they know the secret Klingon password.

AND THEN

AND THEN

Trying to download XDCAM Transfer from Sony site as Apple Support directs me to it but hit free download and it downloads a Citrix app and error message. How do you get XDCam Transfer?

man...how many hoops do I have to jump through? Why can't they make it so these files just work?

This reminds me of when the Deva II was becoming popular, and the post guys would call me and say "I can't do anything with the DVD-RAM".

Dave, I'm sorry to say it, but you're at fault for engaging an editing system that was well-known, well-discussed, and fairly well-documented to pretty much not work with anything!

In the FCP professional editing world, 7 is the lingua franca of systems, while FCP-X...  well...  is responsible for a gaping bullet hole in Apple's foot.

What format do your XDCam videos shot in? According to Sony official site, It often shots videos ended with MXF, MP4, DV-AVI.

As for converting videos for your QuickTime and FCP, You can try AppGeeker. It works really well converting to multiple file formats.

Great little program -- I've been using it for years. If you try it, let me how it goes.
