berniebeaudry
A good value? I know Pro Tools is the defacto standard but I'm not looking to do this on a competitive level. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/audiomastersuite?keycode=64873

Marc Wielage
Buy cheap Pro Tools -- it's $295 for the full version if you just need the basic stuff and can convince a student to buy it for you: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=965020&Q=&is=REG&A=details Be warned that full timecode functionality (export) costs extra. Philip Perkins
In that price range I'd go for Audition, (and get all the TC and etc stuff included) unless you want to learn PT or need it for project exchange. There are also second-hand PT licenses to be had re Ebay and etc, or the Buy and Sell forum of the DUC. philp
Jay Rose
PT and Soundforge are totally separate kinds of animals. SF better for 2-track editing and release mastering. PT is better for multitrack show building. (Please don't flame. I already know that you're a genius at 2-track editing on PT, and that you've built a 6-track mix in SF.) Other alternatives to PT include Nuendo on the high end, and Audition on the lower end... and of course Reaper for very little money at all. Lots of people swear by it. Rick Reineke
SCS's Vegas Pro has a full featured DAW incorporated. (in fact, the first versions of Vegas where audio only) Vegas Pro, Sound Forge Pro and SpectraLayers Pro could be a nice post system. Vegas Pro supports AAF.. but not OMF .. at least w/o third party conversion utility. VP doesn't support MIDI either.
