Nick Campbell
I have a Remote Audio TA3-dual XLR I'm chopping up to put a TA5 on. How does one go about wiring these? I have the diagram for the TA5 (Rean RT5FC-B ) but don't know where to assign the hot/commons and ground for each channel. Searched/looked online and couldn't find much. Thanks. Jack Norflus
TA5 Pin 1 (ground)- pin 1 on both XLRs TA5 Pin 2 (Hot) - pin 2 on "Left" XLR TA5 Pin 3 - Pin 3 on "Left" XLR TA5 Pin 4 (Hot) - Pin 2 on "Right" XLR TA5 Pin 5 - Pin 3 on "Right" XLR
John Blankenship
The pinout is in the Zaxcom manuals. It is: Pin-1 = Ground Pin-2 = Left Channel + Pin-3 = Left Channel - Pin-4 = Right Channel + Pin-5 = Right Channel - (Apparently cross-posted with Jack. He said the same thing in a different way which should be more helpful if you're not familiar with standard XLR wiring.)
Nick Campbell
Awesome and thank you! I should've RTFM.
Nick Campbell
I ended up chopping it up and each XLR cable is unbalanced (ground and single wire). Will these be fine for TA5? Either grounds all in one or grounds split between cold and ground? It's a standard Remote Audio breakout cable for the SD mixers. Cable is Mogami, dual Neutrik XLR's into a TA3 (which I wanted to dunk a TA5 on).
John Blankenship
If it's a short run (like two or three feet), unbalanced probably won't make much difference. Tie ground to each of the "-" pins in the TA5.

Wandering Ear
If it's a short run (like two or three feet), unbalanced probably won't make much difference. Tie ground to each of the "-" pins in the TA5. For in the bag stuff i agree, but if you are making a breakout to run to camera across power lines etc, i would make a balanced cable. jason porter
The use of ta-style connectors is aesthetically pleasing, but it does make the breakout cables a bit of a potential weak link. Good strain relief is key. I think Belden 1804A fits nicely through the connector shell (x2) when you remove the dust boot.
Jack Norflus
I use some thin Miami ( I forget the number ) that I can get two in the ta5 with the wider boot. Plus I can use the strain release on the ta5.

Wandering Ear
I use the mogami 2697 http://www.mogamicable.com/category/bulk/microphone/lavalier/ I was confused, the w2697 you mentioned is the other one i use, not w2901.

John Blankenship
I use some thin Miami ... They're the best because they're pre-sunbaked.

Eric Toline
Here's a set of "Miami Mogami Cables" with my exclusive "Southern Sea Salt Sun Shrunken" XLRs I finished yesterday for a 664.
Nick Campbell
Thanks guys! It's for a short run, less than 3'. It's dual XLR from my tape/mono or A/B output to run into hops or Comteks.
Nick Campbell
I'm making another, this time using 2xMogami balanced cable (to dual female XLR out). There's a lot of ground wire between the two cables, more than I can fit on the "1" ground slot on the TA5 connector. Can I take half of each ground wire (I have them split for each cable) and bend it back and connect it to the crimp sleeve?
Jack Norflus
I just cut back half - or a bit more- of the strands on each cable. Twist the balance if the ground strands together and you are good to go
Nick Campbell
So I have them in two strands per cable- just cut one off and go with the other? Thanks for the quick help!
Jack Norflus
There's a lot of ground wire between the two cables, more than I can fit on the "5" ground slot on the TA5 connector. Not sure what you mean by "5" - but ground goes to pin one on the ta5.
