old school
I read this post from a friend on a social media site and I think it is very bang on. One can own 2 Devas, a Nomad, 3 788's, a 633, 8 radio mics from Lectro, 10 from Zaxcom, 6 from Audio Limited, a Cooper, a Solice, 4 Yamaha's, and every mic ever made. Put it all in a Airstream to carry it around in as you tow it with a Cadillac and you can still be a failure in our business if you don't know these simple things. Thanks Rich. jpbat
Nicely summed up. Hollywood is not my goal, but life, yes. (sometimes, in the heat of the battle, we can forgot those simple things. "always be nice" is a good short reminder to keep at hand anytime) And… I'll add that as we get older, we also get wiser. I remember myself 40 years ago, oh boy...

Johnny Karlsson
Thanks Crew, good stuff. The title reminded me of a quote: Someone (talk show host?) asked Bette Davis if she had any advice for new actors trying to get in to Hollywood. She said “Take Fountain.”
old school
"Take Fountain".... Still laughing. For those who have never been here, Fountain is a street in Hollywood. CrewC

Moesound
This is excellent advice, regardless of ones chosen field. And as anyone who knows my brother can attest, he's lived these words. One can certainly do worse. Anyone serious about making it in this whacked out business would be wise to heed these words. As for Crew, I'll paraphrase my 2nd favorite director, Frank Capra: "to my brother Crew, the richest man I know".

old school
Bro Moe is posting here @jwsound. Wow.This makes me happy. Thanks for the compliment. Moe and I were raised by a father who loved people and had many friends. He treated them all the same no matter their status in life. He'd greet all with a firm hand shake and winning smile as he listened to what they had to say. He worked hard and had fun doing so. This is something that comes naturally to us and I am sure this had more to do with our success than any other factor. This is why this tip I posted rang so true to me. Thanks to RVD for posting this in the 1st place. Now the only thing that would make me happier is if they'd wrap me soon. CrewC
Marc Wielage
These are good tips for any job, not just in de biz: Build A Strong Reputation Always Be On Time Attitude Is Everything Strong Work Ethic Humility Is Key Just Be Nice Hard to argue with any of these. I would add: Don't Panic.

FredS
"Take Fountain".... Still laughing. For those who have never been here, Fountain is a street in Hollywood. CrewC And was the fastest east-west route across it, even through much of my time. Don't know if a there is a fast route any more. Now back to your original thread still in progress... Jeff Wexler
No "fast routes" anywhere in L.A. these days. Fountain certainly was the way to go many, many years ago.
mikewest
What about the idea of delivering good sound?? Additionally I support my shoots with sound fx from my huge library too! mike

studiomprd
west: " What about the idea of delivering good sound?? " actually... the article was more general than one specific department... and, frankly, there are actually some folks in the biz who are quite successful delivering (sometimes barely) adequate results all to often, but they are still working in their crafts for reasons more in line with the article we are discussing! traut
Years ago a new coordinator called to check my availability. When I asked why he picked me, he said "when I was a PA, you were the only sound mixer who was nice to me."

Rob Lewis
"To be Early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late" The one thing my middle school/High School band director taught me that has always stuck in my head thru all facets of life. It has paid great dividends in life as my reputation to many is a dependable mixer that is always punctual to location. I could never thank him enough for that. I don't like being rushed and like to see the location before I do anything
edward chick
I am usually 15-30 min early before call for all of the aforementioned reasons. I feel like I'm ten steps behind during the shoot if I'm not. Ed
