Kit rental on travel days

In my experience, most clients seem to expect to pay a half-day rate for labor per travel day. But what about the kit rental for those days? Full kit fee since the gear is unavailable to anyone else on those travel days? Or is half a rental day the convention?

I get full day on kit for the reasons you specified. I also been getting full day pay. I guess its one of those "do they really have money and are being cheap" or " is the travel really worth it" type decisions you'll have to make. If I was being sent to some tropical island doing sports illustrated swimsuit stuff then I'd be happy with subway sandwich. =) If it's commercial/tv work then they usually have money. This will be apparent when the Producer is being brought his/her starbucks on set.

I charge a full day for travel unless I can book another gig for that same day (and how often does that happen?). The longer the gig the more flexible I am on kit rental for the travel day. I firmly believe it should be a full day pay for both time and gear because it's not like you can make money from another gig on the same day. But, you are up against some companies like LSC or VER offering one-day weeks on gear rental and people willing to say they're local in some city that barely has a gas station.
