DanGreen
Hello all! I’ve been lurking on here for a while and just want to introduce myself and say a big thank you to everyone for providing such a great resource for me and others like me to help learn and grow our craft. The search function on this site has become one of my best friends over the many months. I’m going to be upgrading my recorder soon (a 633) and I was researching what memory cards to purchase for it and it made me think about file sizes. The most I’ve ever filled up in a day for my little 702t was a bit over 4 gigs. I understand 16gigs would probably cover me for most stuff, but I’m just curious about you guys. What’s the biggest size you’ve ever had to unload after a day? P.S. If any veteran New York mixers are in need of a 3rd or a boomer, let me know! johnpaul215
On Doc/reality I've come within minutes of filling a 32GB card a few times. That's a show where you either don't cut, or cut for lunch and not much else. I was probably running more tracks than a 633 can handle. Narrative film stuff I use under 10gb in a day. Sometimes much less.
Marc Wielage
I'm pretty much all 32GB these days. I still have a few old 16GB cards lying around, but (like me) they're old and slow. I can recall doing scripted stuff for 10 tracks all day long and winding up with maybe 10-12GB of material, never more than that. If it were long documentary takes, I could see where those could fill up. But most of my occasional doco projects are no more than 4 tracks. Wandering Ear
Doing reality I've filled a 32gb card in a day. Other work is usually less.
Toy Robot
I stick to 32GB cards and I'm very glad that I do. I would not want less capacity with current multi-channel tracking capabilities.
jason porter
All 32 gb cards for me, the price difference (versus 16) is minimal.
Ze Frias
The type of work I do is usually sit-down interviews, typically running 1-3 inputs. Never go over 8GBs. Sometimes I do movies or commercials that can run 4-6 inputs. Those have gone up to 16-20GBs. That said, most of my cards are 32GBs just because the prices on them aren't that high in comparison, and with media space, it is usually smarter to buy big to adapt for future potential technological changes that will require higher capacities. DanGreen
Thanks everybody, for now 32 gigs seems to be the consensus.
Richard Nault
I'm late to the party, but yeah. 32GB seems to do it for me, never had to go bigger than that. R
chris_bollard
To steal someone else's line "it depends" - really it does. I have 16 and 32gb cards. All are great and work fine with my 788. If I need to swap out and put in another card at a break it's no big deal; a good thing sometimes if I have time to start on copying to the rushes and backup drives
bigbenboom
I do a lot of reality, so I have a 64gb CF and a 32gb SD in my 664. I will never come near filling the 64 gig card in a day, so it allows me to keep a day or two on for back-up just in case. I do back everything up to a drive at the end of the day, but I prefer having the audio in 2-3 places for as long as I can.

It's expensive for a cf card that large but well worth it to have files handy for a few days Ken
studiomprd
osa: " It's expensive for a cf card " it is a bargain for about 130 track/hours of sound...
Marc Wielage
I stick to 32GB cards and I'm very glad that I do. I would not want less capacity with current multi-channel tracking capabilities. I agree with this, but I have a bunch of 32GB cards at the moment (6), and try to rotate them every week during production. And I also back them up the moment I get home and hit the sack. Batteries charging, files backed up, mics degooified, repack the kits... standard routine.
old school
I have 8's, 16's, and a couple of 32's. Whatever it takes. 8 covers most days but I mirror off to a 16 just in case it is a crazy day. My 32's are for music gigs mostly. And I also back them up the moment I get home and hit the sack. Batteries charging, files backed up, mics degooified, repack the kits... standard routine. Exact same thing I do. Rotate cards as well. Also, every time production buys my media or it's sent off for post, the brand new card becomes my Primary CF in Nomad. This way I always have a very new card as Primary since that card gets written to the most. If I sell media to clients more than once every 3 months, I leave the already very new mirror card in and swap a secondary card. It's all quite simple, and ensures that I am constantly using new, approved cards, hopefully minimizing chances of card failure. My backup routine is something I've posted about here before. Super simple, but by the end of each production day my sound files are in no less than 4 places, and by the end of 24 hours the files are backed up forever with a little help from DropBox's Pack Rat feature. It has saved me (read: my clients) more than once.
Boomboom
633 usage: 16Gb cards here, BUT for the same reasons johnpaul is giving, I'm going 32Gb now. The 16Gb cards were bought for scripted work, now for doco/reality it's like I'd need 20Gb most of the times with 7 tracks recording to cover for a day so... 32Gb on the way ! (two of them, btw, which I'll swap from day to day) I also have a 64Gb under the hood for the same reason bigbenboom has one. Planning on a 128Gb when prices lower a tad. At the end of the day, as being said above by Marc, I save everything on two ext hard drives and give the files to prod; I'm a follower of the ''make 3 copies'' rule. I'd like a 128Gb card in the recorder just so I can keep the files a little longer in fact...
Jon Gilbert
32GB CF and 64GB SD cards in my 664, shooting docs, with 4 ISO tracks and a 2 channel mix, I rarely exceed 10GB in a day
John Blankenship
I carry eight 64gb cards which serve as my main drives in both a Nomad and a Deva and I carry fifteen 32gb cards which are used for mirroring. I also tote along a few 8gb CFs for smaller gig mirrors that might need to fly away with a producer. Having that many cards means I don't have to do backups every night and can do a bunch at once on break days.

I carry 2 64g cards, and 6 32g, rotate then, and do dumps of multiple days when the cards are starting to fill.
