Jason Todd
Just curious to know if anyone on the forum has experience with the Red Epic 2.0 fans. Are they a big improvement over the original fans? How to the compare to the Mecasax fan plate? A production I'm on has green lit a fan upgrade. Just curious which option I should recommend. Jim Feeley
IME, ya the new fans are much better...as evidenced by a recent two-RED shoot I was on where one camera had the new fans and one didn't. Sorry, can't comment on the Mecasax plate.
Jason Todd
Believe me, John. I pushed for an Alexa. We ended up ordering the new red fans. I worked with a scarlet that had the new fans and it was a big improvement. We'll see how they work for the epic. We shoot in 5k a lot and the fans have been a huge pain. Wandering Ear
I think the new fans have made a big difference. Good to hear production is listening!
taylormadeaudio
starting a 2-Red Epic series in a couple weeks... I've pushed for the fans (especially with summer approaching)... hope to God they took the advice. Someday I'll work with you again, Alexa... someday : / ~tt

Jason Todd
We've had the new fans for a couple of weeks and they've definitely made a positive difference.
Marc Wielage
And I'm again impressed that Red is at least listening to complaints and trying to come up with a solution! First the noise... next, the timecode...
studiomprd
Just saw a new RED 24k rig and it is 6 times as noisy; good thing about it is that in Winter, it makes a great space heater.
Patrick Tresch
Sound of new Red Epic DP... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0xRrUVVKigk Lol. FYI the Epic with the FanPlate has the same noise floor as the Alexa in prores mode. Have a nice shooting. Pat
Armin Siegwarth
I am on an Red Epic shoot right now with the additional 2 Top Fans. Today it faild at an long Interview after about 30min. Fan Setting was "Adaptive - Quiet Record" with target Temp of 65 Degrees Celcius and Record speed max of 40%. How are your experiences of fan settings with the 2 top fans? Red service told me target Temp 60 Degrees is better for Millenium Sensor. Default is 65 Deg - thats for Dragon Sensor.
Patrick Tresch
Hello Armin, How did it "fail". Was the leaf blower mode triggered or did the recording stop... ? Quiet record is great for small takes as the camera will "stop to breathe" waiting for the end of the take. For longuer takes "adaptive" mode (only) would be better but you'll have a heavier fan noise to get to target (65C° or worst 60C°). IMHO the new fans from RED are good in cooling faster but not for a longer takes where a constant cooling has to be maintained. There fore we designed the FanPlate with a large fan that spinns slower. What was the room temp? Thanks Pat
