Getting Back In The Game

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. Experienced sound mixer/boom op/A2 returning from a long hiatus. Did ten years of production in LA (including a few days with Wexler)! Been out of the business for a while, but looking to get back to work in a hurry. Currently living in Winston-Salem, NC, but willing to travel anywhere.

Looking forward to meeting everyone at the big get together next weekend in ATL. Love to talk to you about any upcoming projects. Sold my gear a while back, but will be slowly building up a kit again, and happy to rent for now. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Just wanted to update this post. Living in Atlanta now and looking for work as a sound utility/boom op. In the process of re-activating my 695 membership and able to work as a local here in Atlanta. Currently working with mixer Carl Rudisill on a feature for the next couple weeks.

Rob: " re-activating my 695 membership and able to work as a local here in Atlanta "

your 695 membership entitles you to work as a local in LA county.  You need to join the Atlanta Local.

Indeed. 479. Just put in an application and pay your fees and you will be accepted and sworn in before you can say "residency requirements".

Todd is correct -- In fact, the local will give you explicit instructions on how to circumvent the residency requirements.
Once you fill out the waiver it'll go to the E-board where it will be rubber stamped and you'll get voted in before the ink is even dry.

It's good you are already here and working as a local..... while not being in the local....while locals are at home.....

You'll fit right in.

Todd -

How do good people on the roster get better and more experienced when their opportunities are snatched away?

And right now, two shows are operating with unusually large sound crews - the condition you may be experiencing is quite unusual and  temporary.  When they both wrap (one next week), the glut of available brothers & sisters out on the street looking for work will soon be unfun.

Rob -

I believe you are being mis-advised regarding IATSE membership, and it's an easy guess by whom.  Would it not be a violation of the L.A. 695 contract to work for ASA rates?  There is no wild-catting, as far as I know - the rates of the 695 contract are to be respected by it's members.  Not illicitly negotiating around the contract, besides being the right thing to do, is what levels the field.

The 695 contract is what we all hope to work under someday, should the wisdom of forming a national sound union be realized.

I know that there are various tiers and side-letter BS that 695ers have to deal with, but the contract is the contract.

If you want to be a local in Atlanta (and be subject to the near 50% reduction in rates thanks to the ASA) you need to apply for and be voted into Local 479.  As well, I'm not certain what the implications are for insurance options via IATSE under the bad advice you are being given.

I, and every other mixer in 479, is under oath to employ - and promote the employment of - our local brothers & sisters.

As long as the roster has available people, I would not be able to bring onboard anyone that was not "479", as I would be subject to charges.

Not being harsh here - I hope to meet you and work with you sometime soon.  But you need to be 479 for that to happen.

Have been working for the last month and totally missed all of these posts! Think my situation is unique as I quit the business in 2000 and haven't worked on a film until last month as a sound PA on a feature mixed by Carl Rudisill. In any case, 695 is sending me a transfer card which I will be bringing by the 479 office as soon as it arrives in the mail. Looking forward to meeting Mike, Todd, and anyone else looking for a qualified utilily/boom operator on any upcoming project. Understand Cujo's position on the residency matter (as we worked together a couple weeks back on the same project), but I have been out of the loop for so long it is unlikely I will be competing with him or anyone else for any positions other than the ones they have already rejected!

Hi Guys,

I am pretty much being sarcastic..or not serious, or whatever..but thanks for the tip on the residency requirements. As a soon to be out of work North Carolina resident and member of 491, it is good to know.  All we hear up here in NC is how busy it is in Atlanta and how everyone is working and there aren't enough people to fill the jobs..even utility.  Don't worry, I don't plan to move there.  Good Luck everyone.
