Audio Broad
Thanks All responders. That goes on your permanent record. Replacement machine working, they'll let the crew calm down and go from there.
Marc Wielage
In the couple of years I owned a 744, I had it lock up twice. The solution was to disconnect the power, remove all batteries and let it sit for a couple of minutes. (I may have also taken a paper bag with a dead chicken in it and swung it over my head.) Batteries back in, power reconnected, then reboot... and it was fine. Never happened during record, but I once had it happen right before I was going into record. I suspect it was just a fluke. Philip Perkins
I've had way weirder 744 incidents than that, incl ones wher the whole front panel turned into a random full-brightness lightshow, which gradually calmed completely down to normal as new firmware was loaded. 744s are so cheap now that it's not hard to have a 2nd one as a backup along. philp
Marc Wielage
Oh, yeah -- I've seen the "Christmas Tree Light" syndrome. I think I had that happen when I hooked up the 744 through its firewire connection to a computer, copied the files off, ejected it... but the 744 didn't want to "let go." Got it back through the same routine of disconnecting all the batteries. The 744 is still a good, usable machine for certain things. Has the price come down on them? I was kind of hoping that, with the emergence of the 633, the 744 would suddenly drop to $1500 or something...
Rick Reineke
The 'dead chicken in bag' method would be my initial repair procedure. ..and those of us who own 744s hope the price goes back up

My lightshow had nothing to do with FW, just some kind of firmware freakout, or cosmic ray activity etc etc. Who knows? Yes, sacrifice a chicken, burn some black candles, throw some oatmeal at the moon with your devil hat on…. philp
