Dave
Hi Ty, I have/use a Fostex DC-R302 with a Canon DSLR and Pluraleyes. I've also used it for recording live-off-the-floor stereo mic singer-songwriter demos and it sounded musical, full and pleasing. I really like it - small and light but well built out of metal, not plastic, 3 XLR inputs, preamps sound good, integrates with DSLR with start-stop feature, can mount under camera. The downsides might be lack of XLR outputs (RCA only), no timecode, goes through AA batteries pretty fast, esp with phantom on, and "just" 2 tracks. The unit itself is very small so the buttons are also quite tiny which might not be good for some hands but still workable. For the current price of $650 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846034-REG/Fostex_DC_R302_DC_R302_3_Channel_Audio_Mixer.html it's a great sounding, solid tool..... original price was $1,000. The current software revision is solid. I'm going to hook it up to my Sound Devices 302 mixer to compare preamps. Although I've yet to try it, you can use it as a basic usb interface into a computer but I've heard there is some latency? Anyhow, my two cents worth. Cheers! All the best, Dave
Jay Rose
How does it compare with Tascam's under-DSLR offering?
Dave
Hi Jay, Sorry, haven't tried the Tascam DSLR unit. But, I also have a Tascam HD-P2 and the Fostex DC-R302 sounds as good, if not better to me, if that means anything :-) The first reviewer on this BH Photo page does a good job talking a bit about the Fostex DC-R302 compared to the Tascam DR-60. He likes having physical knobs and switches and I find this a big plus too. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846034-REG/Fostex_DC_R302_DC_R302_3_Channel_Audio_Mixer.html I'd love to hear your and Ty's take on both units. Nice to chat! Cheers, Dave
franky03
+1 to what Dave said... The dynamic range seems more like 16bit, even if you put it @ 24. I was surprised by the mic pres... Very decent for the price! The direct out (1/8" on left side of the unit) does not work on mine... Could of been useful for a comtek feed. All in all, good for starters and small 5d gigs. Very simple unit to operate. Franky
