Shalom, Vitaly: " How you doing this, "

NEVER by gettinbg into the boot to record while driving...

this is frequently discussed, including a current discussion that has begun since 14 May; for searching this site, I suggest Google, and jwsoundgroup.net as the first search term.

Vitaly: " ....and so on. "

Maybe you should introduce yourself, and tell us something about your background, and so forth...

there is a thread here called "Who I am..." where folks do that.

I don't mean to sound snobby, but this is a professional forum and discussion group.

sounds like you need to do some reading...

there is lots, and lots of excellent information on this forum, and...

Jay Rose has just published the book you want: Recording Great Sound... 4th edition...  www.dplay.com

this book is also discussed in a current thread on this group.

an additional book might be Rick Viers' Location Sound Bible at www.mwp.com

sorry, but I'm not going to do your homework for you, you will have to figure out how to search for what you need; I'll say that you need to try a variety of different search terms sometimes.  in Google, if the first search term is jwsoundgroup.net  then Google will search this site for your terms.

go ahead...

Hi! thanks for your answer.

i`m new on this site, so im not so good in searching on it.

Go to the home page for this forum. In the upper-right corner SEARCH box, enter the text "car." In the results, scroll down a bit and you'll see a recent detailed discussion of some options. Scroll down some more, or try different search terms, for more.

If you want still more results, search on Google. And either before or after your search terms enter:  site:jwsoundgroup.net

The "site:" text tells Google to limit results to only those on this forum.

Jim: " In the upper-right corner SEARCH box, enter the text "car." "

for better results, you also need to select "forums" (between the search terms and the search icon), but I still prefer Google.

Jeepers Mike, you're a great guy in person but your responses here frequently run ahead of yourself.

If you go to the home page, "Forums" is selected by default. As you'd know if you checked before you posted.  And note that I provided information on how to get the best responses out of Google.

Rob, are you talking about that weird redirect from a Google search to some fake-o urlinfo (or some such) website? For me at least, that problem's gone away recently (I think because of some specific efforts Jeff made). Or are you bumping into another problem?

ok.. as far as mics.. many of us use Sanken Cubs attached to the car ceiling and visors with furry windscreens..  Mic the car, not the talent.

and even recent epic car chase franchise movies of a title you certainly would recognize place the recorder in the car preset, and have it unmanned...

they do use wireless monitoring to get a sense of what is being recorded, when possible.

Last week we shot two actors in the back seat, cam from front passenger seat.

Two KM 185 mounted to the backs of the front seats, two lavs. That day my job was more about setting the 788 up in a way it would do a great auto-mix. It did, and it usually it preferred the KM 185s over the Cos-11. Just like I would have. We listened in the follow car radio over a small FM transmitter fed by a Sennheiser IEM, and had walkie connection back to them.

Wow nice work. What the heck caused it?

It can happen when evil spirits get into the DNS servers. I try to use a 3rd-party DNS server like Google's, which generally does not run into weird URL redirects.

As to the o.p.'s question: I'm convinced there's an entire detailed book on the location sound mixing process here on this forum, including four or five detailed discussions on micing people in moving vehicles. It'd just be a question of gathering up all the specific URLs on each specific subject and posting the list as a permanent reference. Heck, you might even be able to excerpt all the text and literally write a book using this source material. But you'd have to track it all down first.

Just had a shoot with a travelling shot in a van. camera in back seat, me too. Very bumpy back country gravel road. driver's window had to be open for script reasons.only shooting one passenger at a time. my preferred method is Sanken COs-11s on the visors or a Schoeps from underneath.  no go in this situation. wound up using a 416 from underneath. usually not my favourite for this situation, but it cut through the best. tons of low frequency for post to fix, but the voices were just fine. kind of liked there being just me and the cameraman in the back seat (both of us wore seatbelts). slated it myself. follow vehicle had Comtek feed run into vehicle's stereo system. no video feed. sound ruled this one.

  • 6 years later...

yes chris , very similar to what i did. 2 lavs were just too much  background noise.

the trouble was ; it started raining and one of the arris  fell

off the bonnet (hood) !!!!!

 the 'talent' kept driving!

same shoot where i got soaked to the skin, even wearing the ''proper'' clothing,

the batteries went flat in the nagra

and we had to share r/mic  channels with the independents , just up the road

not a good day !
