So pleased that we have someone who replies to everybody's posts! What a blessing for this site. So often the answers are so concise, so economical in the choice of words, so helpful. I have been archiving these answers, hoping someday to publish a reference work "Words of Wisdom from JWSOUNDGROUP". Chapter One: "Yes" followed by Chapter Two: "It Depends", Chapter Three: "Read the Effin' Manual", "Do a Search", and on and on.

Speaking only for myself, I like puns and corny jokes. The 1st 100 times you hear them they are groan worthy and not very funny. It is after that mystical 100th or 1000th time that they become funny. You see them coming and they get even funnier. That's the way Mike is for me. I also find it funny that he annoys such a majority of folks here @jwsound. Look at it this way, if we didn't have Mike we'd be at each others throats more often. He's like the mud on a bee sting, he pulls out the poison so to speak.

BTW, you need another film Jeff. Keeping this list will exhaust you. The Senator is relentless.

Fairly benign, but less entertaining and much less informative than the wild cards on RAMPS all that time ago. Now they were often quite creative and uncovered a lot of new information and solutions if you could put up with the often insulting manner and even find it amusing, in an over the top kind of way. Though some of the scraps did get out of hand and boring.

Infinitely better than r.a.m.p.s. (that's why I started JWSOUND in the first place). I hope no one thinks I was really slamming you know who --- I just find it amusing when I see the whole lineup of his avatar with one post after another.  I am surprised as well the number of people who seem to get really upset by these posts --- there is no harm done, often there is value with these posts, I wouldn't want it any different.

I think it's funniest when you or Eric Toline let him get under your skin from time to time.

I'm in full agreement with Crew's view on him. He's the guy in the room that you just can't wait to hear respond after someone asks a question that'll set him off.

Sounds to me like this thread is about to bust out singing "for he's a jolly good fellow..."

Exactly. I participate in several other industry discussion groups, and I've told the Senator in-person, "I'm almost turning into the crusty curmudgeon on these forums, yelling 'read the F'in' manual! Do a Google search! This question has been asked 700 times before! It's the archer, not the arrows! Hire a professional!'" Far too many neophytes want easy solutions to complex problems, and they also think there's a magic button that fixes everything.

And typically, even though they don't want to hear it, these are all correct answers.

The worst situations I see are when people go out, do their shoot (or their audio or their timecode or their edit) completely wrong, then ask why it's not working. It's sort of like driving the train off the tracks, then asking, "can anybody tell me the best way to drive a train?" It's sad when that happens.

NO RAMPS redux please, so much personal ad hominem noise…..

philp

Excellent I've learned something new, had to look up ad hominem ...

Abusive ad hominem usually involves attacking the traits of an opponent as a means to invalidate their arguments. Equating someone's character with the soundness of their argument is a logical fallacy. Mere verbal abuse in the absence of an argument, however, is not ad hominem nor any kind of logical fallacy.

Thanks philp.

I guess I find ad hominem amusing because it can be so ridiculous.

What I hate isn't the ones who come back and say "why isn't the sync stable?" or even "why is there so much echo?"... at least they recognize the specific issue, and are willing to go halfway to solving their problem, and might learn for the next shoot. (Okay, I'm optimistic.)

What I hate are the ones who come back and say either,

"I did it just like the big-time engineers I've seen in 'making of' movies... so it's not my fault"

    or

"What plug-in do I use that'll fix it? Can you give me a copy of your serial number for that plugin?"

Makes me want to emulate the Senator, sometime.

(Except I'm stuck with this gentlemanly persona I evolved for my web writing....)

One of my big things when I wear my sound hat is, if somebody snaps, "there's a train coming! We have a sound problem!" And I'll frown and say "we have a location problem." Sound is just fine.

I have dealt with an amazing number of otherwise bright producers who choose very bad locations on occasion. The smart ones listen in on the Comteks, nod to me and say, "I get it. It is what is. Let's roll." So they understand the issues but have to deal with what fate handed them.
