osa Posted September 20, 2014 Report Share Posted September 20, 2014 I wired a B6 for my TRX yesterday and used it on a job along side a lectro sma with a b6 as well. I noticed a considerable amount of hiss on my trx where as the lectro appeared to be chrystal clear. All gain structure appeared to be appropriate for both. I followed the countryman specs for wiring. All of my cos-11d's that i wired come out clean when compared to a lectro wired version. Anyone else have this trouble and know where i might have gone wrong? My search function via google keeps taking me to a weird page so i cant seem to find anything related to this topic at the moment. Is ground connected to both pin-1 and the shell? does not appear to be RF - it is a steady "tape hiss" type sound. it was on the low side but shows when A/B ing between two people miked side by side during a sitdown interview, 1 being trx and 1 being sma, both similar b6 mics. ground is indeed connected to both pin 1 and the shell. lma2.5->qrx100->633 line level. i played with raising/lowering gain at qrx and 633 inputs. going to try and duplicate the problem and play with gain structure variations at trx and 633. i suspect opperator error. gain if i remember correctly was 20-30 on trx and 12 o'clock on the 633. What matters is gain staging optimization. agreed. just throwing it out there to give thorough info as much as i can and too see if there is something glaringly obvious i am missing. I believe my gain structure to be relatively good for the levels from the voice source at the time. "Is it a padded b6? Extensive laboratory testing (aka my hotel room) helped me determine the source of the noise is at the analog output of the qrx100 into analog input of my 633. I did detect there was noise with my sanken cos11d when compared to another with a lectro sma but it wasnt as noticable as with the b6 on the trx. W.E. I think you nailed it, my srb did have NOR setting on smtNR. I am going to try digital input to my 633 this week to see if it eliminates the issue all together. osa Posted January 7, 2015 Author Report Share Posted January 7, 2015 still struggling with this issue. i am considering buying a brand new B6 wired for zaxcom trx to see if it solves the hiss problem i still seem to be having. i did a search and although this is a 7 year old ramps thread slighlty on the topic it seems to touch on the same problems i am having: http://rec.arts.movies.production.sound.narkive.com/fZadb6jr/zaxcom-wireless-too-noisy i really love the B6 for those certain situations where the B6 is the best fit. use it rarely, but reached for it recently and i had to bail because the signal to hiss ratio on a soft spoken female talent was unbarable when compared to a cos11d on her husband right next to her. the sankens i also had wired myself so i'd like to believe it's not soldering error on my part. the B6 is properly grounded to the shell. i know the answer has got to be yes but can anyone here confirm successfully clean signal relative to other lav's in your kit from grey band B6 and trx? -Ken Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

osa Posted April 19, 2015 Author Report Share Posted April 19, 2015 Problem solved. Bought a brand new grey band wired to screw on lemo from usual suspect and problem is gone. My wiring seemed to be similar to theirs. The mic worked fine when switched back to lectro so the original mic seems to be in working order. All i can figure is it might be an old mic version that possibly has been revised over time. There are some older threads in other parts of the web that point to similar issues with noise from back in 2010 ish. glad i can hear for myself that countryman and zaxcom do play nice together. using today with great success on female talent where previously her softer diolog was plagued with cassette tape hiss! -Ken Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
