Anyone tried the Lav Snake from Remote Audio?

Used the remote audio lav snake for a good 2 months now. I'm on a series that's all western period wardrobe and had been having a hell of a time getting down tight layers, tight pants and really tight corsets. Often the bullet would just fall off half way through the pant leg and fall into the boot. The lav snake saved me a ton, really fast to use and the actors all loved it, 'no leg shaking required'. The connector end also plugs in well so won't slide out like the bullet. Best part is the nice bag it comes with. I put it in my belt pouch but can easily slip somewhere in a bag cart or pocket.

The downsides is that it's a bit cumbersome to pull out and wrap it back up without whipping anyone in a crowded room and for a standard shirt or loose pants the bullet still wins for ease and speed. A couple times the wire had bended the wrong way and went through a wrong layer or would get stuck in a really loose pair of pants. Also a bit pricey for what it is.. Personally I prefer it over the rod as it's more portable and less intimidating to some actors or non actors but will default to the bullet unless it's a tight wardrobe. Another tool for specific uses but when it's useful it really helps.

I havent had a lot of chances to use it, but a few times I had talent with super skin tight pants on and it worked really well. Mainly It saved me a couple of minutes. Those minutes mean a lot with a cranky 1st AD breathing down your neck...

Group member Steve Saada, who's booming the HBO show VEEP spends a lot of time wiring folks and really likes the Lav Snake. Last time I was visiting, he demonstrated it for me while doing a TX ankle placement on a young woman day player and it worked really great. I got the impression he likes it because you can carry it on your person so it's always conveniently at hand.

Best regards,

Jim

Looks like a Lav Rod knockoff.

I prefer the lav bullet. It's quick and less obtrusive.

There are several weights and rods out there, but the Lav Snake is unique in the way it works, and is in no way a knock off of anything available. The rod and weight do some things very well, and in some situations would be preferred. But the Lav Snake works in every situation the rod or weight do, and also works in situations the rod and weight can't, which is where the Lav Snake shines. The combination of working in tight clothing (most clothing seems to be), and working in long clothing, while still fitting in your pocket set the Lav Snake apart.

There is a technique for coiling and opening the lav snake. I call it, "three coils and two wraps", which is a quick and secure what to make it pocket-size, then safely uncoil it. Here is a little video not yet posted that shows how it's done:

Got slapped for using it on a woman!!

Be careful out there.

I used it on an actress I'd never met before, and had a great time together the next weekend.

Glen, the audio is very low relative to most web videos

It isn't a web video at this point. It's just a rough demo intended for in-house reference, but it shows how to coil and uncoil the Lav Snake, so I thought I'd make it available here. If you download it you'll find that the audio is normal level.
