Glen Trew
hello I was wondering if their were any users of the new Sonosax SX-R4 and if so what were there opinions of the recorder, many thanks Richard Paterson I don't know if any in use yet, but Peter Kurland saw the recorder at the Trew Audio store (US location) then posted the opinion below on ramps: I was at Trew Audio today picking up some odds and ends and they had a ready-for-sale SX-R4 on display. The device looks fantastic. It's much smaller than I had expected and extraordinarily well laid out and built. Specifications and capabilities are at the Sonosax site but I thought I'd mention a couple of impressions. First, it has all the advantages of the MiniR82. Excellent routing capability, HD or Flash, small size, and great design. But they've overcome what I thought were the MiniR82's major limitations in usability. The inputs are standard XLR with hard switches for power, level and phase. And there's four of them! There's normal level control with 4 pots on the front panel. For the small size increase, the flexibility is immensely improved. The biggest improvement is in operating interface. The SX-R4 has the same display and menuing as the MiniR82, but with a much more intuitive clickable joystick. This makes the same functions much more accessible. But my favorite new control is the actual record switch! No matter the mode, now you can flick the switch to record and instantly perform the device's main function, recording. The switch is protected against accidental operation, but is very easy to use. It also will play when flicked the other direction. It's as close to the Nagra's simple rotary function control as I've seen but easier to use. At around $6100, its more expensive than the 744T, but adds 2 standard inputs, reduction in size, and surprisingly runs on 6 internal AA batteries. I didn't have time today to test the USB transfers or look at the uses of the multipin connector on the right panel, but I believe all the software is essentially identical to the MiniR82 and everything in it worked very well. I also didn't do critical listening tests but every Sonosax product thus far sounds great. Peter
