The Studio was at 10,000 Feet and it was thought the the  "thin air" gave the studio a distinct sound. I think the Neve 8016 Recording Console had a lot to do with it.

CARIBOU RANCH ® AND STUDIO MEMORABILIA AUCTION

In 1971 James William (Jim) Guercio purchased a ranch near Nederland, Colorado to build what would become the legendary Caribou Ranch. Mr. Guercio started in the music business with Dick Clark in 1962, touring and performing with Gene Pitney, Brian Hyland, Del Shannon, Chuck Berry and Bobby Darin. He was an original guitarist with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention and produced, arranged and composed numerous hits for Chad & Jeremy and the Buckinghams. Mr. Guercio received a Grammy Award as the producer of Blood, Sweat & Tears, which won the 1970 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

In 1972 Joe Walsh recorded the first album that came out of the Caribou Ranch recording studio, the eponymous Barnstorm. The barn conversion was not yet complete, but the dirt floors were only a tribute to the remote, creative ambiance Mr. Guercio had created. The state of the art recording studio, far away from big city distractions, allowed bands to fully immerse themselves in the creative process. “Rocky Mountain Way” was the first hit recorded.

As the first destination recording studio, music history was made by illustrious artists and groups such as Elton John, Stephen Stills, Billy Joel, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beach Boys, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, Frank Zappa, Jerry Lee Lewis, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, U2 and many more. Elton John’s 1974 album Caribou was recorded at and named after the studio where his next two albums would also be recorded: Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and Rock of the Westies. Wildly popular songs from the 1970s and 80s were written and recorded on the ranch that include chart topping hits such as Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Shining Star,” Chicago’s “If You Leave Me Now,” and Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom.”

The sale of memorabilia from the Caribou Ranch collection offers a rare opportunity for music fans to access the music, instruments and memorabilia of the studio, but even more unique is the opportunity to acquire the quality, rustic items used daily by artists on the ranch, which remind us that at times, everyone, even a music legend, just needs to “get away.”

Caribou Ranch was in operation for just over a decade until the control room suffered extensive fire damage in March 1985. Caribou Ranch is being inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2015 along with Joe Walsh, Barnstorm and Dan Fogelberg. A portion of the auction proceeds will go to The Colorado Music Hall of Fame, a 501© (3) non-profit organization (EIN 27-2529106) founded in 2011 to honor those individuals who have come to define the state’s amazing and diverse musical legacy.

An old mentor and tech teacher of mine, Michael Mroz (RIP), had been a studio tech at Caribou Ranch.  He was there the night it burned down.  Out of all the studios he worked at that one held a special place in his heart.  He never got tired of reminiscing about it.
