Jeff Wexler
Ronald Topham, 82, of New York January 25th 1932 - January 23rd 2015 Ronald Topham, 82, passed away on January 23rd, 2015 Announced on Professional Sound Services site "A Brief History of The Tophams in Professional Sound : Ronald Topham started Audio Services Company and Sales Center Inc. in New York back in 1969. Ronald invited his older brother, Richard (Dick) Topham, into the company in 1977. Dick Topham was in management at a major computer corporation when he got a call from his brother Ronald Topham about opening an Audio Services store in Los Angeles. Ronald was getting a lot of business from the major film studios in California and knew that they could provide even faster and better service if they didn't have to ship Nagra's all the way across the country (this was in the 70's). At the time, Rich Topham Jr. (around 22) was thinking about moving to Saudi Arabia to work in the oil fields with a friend, when his father told him about Ronald's offer. Dick Topham went into the service department of Audio Services with Ronald for 1 week, and Rich went in for 1 day before they moved to Hollywood." Jeff Wexler
I only met Ron a handful of times while working in New York but I will always be grateful for his suggestion to have his brother Dick open up Audio Services in Los Angeles. I was one of their first customers when they started out in an office building on Sunset Blvd., a couple of folding tables with a small amount of gear displayed, a small office that I think was also the service department. Just like Audio Services in New York it was a great business headed up by really good people, Ron, Dick, Rich, Jr.
