franky03
Hi all, I have this director who dislikes to wear headphones. He also dislikes the sound of the small1 watt speakers found on most video monitors. Trying to find a solution for him... There are lots of portable speakers out there... anyway to put the speaker firmly on the video monitor? Any suggestions would me most welcomed! Thanks in advance, Franky
RPSharman
How is he going to listen to the performances? With an open speaker near set? He'd have to be pretty far away to not screw up the sound or distract the actors. Or does he plan to stand on set with the actors during takes, then listen to playback over a speaker (not our job as mixers).
Rick Reineke
I have some Anchor AN130s. They're relativley small, decent sounding and loud if need be, but need AC power. Brakets are avaialble for stand or wall mounting. I certainly wouldn't allow them to be on during takes unless in an ISO'd room.
franky03
Forgot to mention that indeed its only for the playbacks... I will look at the Anchors but would really prefer them to be also battery operated... Franky
dfisk
Remote audio Speakeasy?
Joshua Anderson
There's a remote audio speakeasy that's rackmount able - the R1, I think. It takes 12v so if your connecting to a video cart that already runs off of camera batteries, you might be able to easily add it. The other speaker that I think sounds really good is the jawbone jam box. The larger one. If you run it with the mini plug input, you shouldn't have to worry about unwanted people connecting via Bluetooth.
Boomboom
To put the speaker on the monitor, I'd go with the MiniJambox. This director should be happy. If monitor is mounted into handles like Ikan, Shape, or the like, I guess it wouldn't be difficutlt to figure out how to mount the speaker on the rig. https://jawbone.com/speakers/minijambox
Nick Ray Harris
The rackmounted speakeasy is the only one I can think of that has brackets, there's also some similar speaker systems you can sometimes find in tv production trucks. Aside from the cheaper solution of a UE Boom or similar speaker that has a carabiner that can hang off the village cart.
Boomboom
Oops...The way I understood it was the director carrying a 7" monitor in his hands... Different story with a whole rig on a stand.
RPSharman
Again, I'm wondering why you are handling video playback. If you're feeding camera so they can play back from camera, let the typically well-staffed camera department worry about it. How many people are on your crew? franky03
Thanks for all the feedback guys... very much appreciated We usually have video assist, Im not handling video playback. The problem is that the director doesn't like to wear headphones and doesn't like the sound of the small speakers found on the video monitors, usually something like this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/891005-REG/Panasonic_bt_lh2170pj_21_5_LCD_Studio_Monitor.html Its on a stand and I cant really attach anything to it. Im just trying to improve the quality of the sound for playback. I found multiple portable speakers, but its more the rigging thats giving me a headache. Thank you Nick for the suggestion of the UE Boom or similar speaker that has a carabiner. Will investigate that solution! Franky
John Blankenship
Those types of monitors are usually mounted with a yoke. Usually it's not too difficult to strap something underneath the yoke.
Jim Gilchrist
The little Soundmatters speakers are pretty swell. They have an internal battery and also will run via a USB smart phone booster battery. http://soundmatters.com/store/ Best regards, Jim
Olle Sjostrom
I just bought two X-mini speakers for nothing basically. They are super tiny and do the job well. They don't sound like WOW but hey.. Ultra tiny. They could probably be velcroed to anything. 20 hours of battery. They have enough volume, defintely. Franky On the UE Boom, the ring for the carabiner is attached with a threaded screw, leaving a female threaded hole in the bottom of the speaker, if you wanted to get real crafty you could put a similar sized bolt through the playback cart somewhere and thread that on top. johngooch
I've seen some DC powered galaxy audio hot spot speakers on some Video carts. Have a lot of punch- rack mountable and useful beyond just for director feeds.
Tom E
Check out the demerbox. Battery powered, sounds good, and it's made from a pelican case, so the handle makes mounting easy.

David Waelder
Franky, the OP, clarified that the speaker was for use when playing back scenes, not during the original record. I expect that playback occurs in a somewhat different environment. The director may wish to interact with his production team and point out issues that might be problematic: "Do you think her hair is a little too perfect for someone just coming out of a struggle?" That kind of thing. Comfortable interaction is much easier with speaker playback than when everyone is wearing headphones. Of course, he/she would be a jerk to expect perfect tonal quality in a portable device that can be clipped to a monitor. But I don't get the sense that's the case here. franky03
Thanks to all who have added their 0.02$ You are right David, its usually playbacks that involve many departments and the actors too. I might also add that the director used to also be a drummer, he surely has some hearing damage(!) Have a nice weekend jw Franky
