al mcguire
"It really starts with [production sound mixers] on set being a pain in the ass," In my experience being a PITA really doesn't work real well and trust me I tried. It is more about education, letting the electrics know to keep ballasts with fans far way from the set, and letting the back round artistes know we can hear you scuffing your shoes. Talking on the set and phones going off while shooting is the province of the 1st AD. I do love a Director with 2 hearing aids as they hear everything, Hal Needham comes to mind, I remember him closing Craft Service when the camera was rolling. pkautzsch
You do need to be a PITA with airplanes and other external influences that result from bad location choice. You don't need to be a PITA with other departments if you arrive early on first shooting day and make sure yourself that those departments work in a sound-friendly way. Great to have backup by AD and director.
