Mike Robertson
Hey guys, Was recently looking for new headphones and found a great website for A/B comparisons [source vs. headphones] They posted a video on what I consider a pretty intricate testing phase. Headphone Testing They also have a soundcloud website database of different headphones / monitors / microphones. I found it very useful narrowing down my selections. Sound Cloud Library Apologies if this is old hat - but it is kind of fun to see how the cans you are using stack up against the mastered tracks. Solid Goldberger
I like the idea, though I think for a lot of products we use (microphones and headphones specifically), I feel like the way they perform on a boom or buried in clothes (the way we individually lav them) is such an important part of the selection process. That said, when I was first getting into recording at age 13 or 14, I was an aspiring hippie, who went to see as many Phish shows as I could convince my parents to drive me to, and I was instantly drawn to the taper section. At the time there were a couple great vendors that sold gear dedicated to the "Taper" industry; those included Sonic Sense, Oade Brothers, and Masterpiece A/V, which eventually was acquired by Dale Pro Audio. It ended up being through Masterpiece that I purchased my first recorder, a Sony D8 DAT Recorder that I bought with my savings from an entire summer working as an assistant counselor at a summer camp (I believe it was $600!). I was always struck by how cool it was that these dealers gave me such good service and support, and treated me like an adult when I was clearly not gonna be a big source of revenue. It spoiled me for that kind of customer service, though I'm happy to say that that same spirit carried over to when I started doing this for a living, and did my shopping at Pro-Sound and the other "Usual Suspects". Anyways, sorry to hijack your thread, I just hadn't seen the Sonic Sense brand in a very long time, and it brought me back to some of the original experiences that made me want to schlep gear for a living in the first place. I imagine they're still a great resource. e.
