johnpaul215
To me, this does not look like anything nefarious, but obviously I have a different mindset than security people. Even if I can't fly with it, it was worth making for driving jobs. I found clear PVC pipe on eBay. 2" x 36" for about $30. Enough for three microphones. The black rubber end caps were $3/each at Lowe's hardware. I use the 2 inch because I wanted to protect the foam. Those have a habit of getting destroyed in a Pelican, and offers shock mounting in the tube.
johnpaul215
Been using this for my backup VDB boom for years. Even packed it in luggage, but it's long.
jason porter
In your carry-on...might get some questions but that's about it. I think including a printout of the products "one sheet" and tucking it I to the tube may help.
johnpaul215
Jason: I was thinking a checked Pelican full of gear. Not in a carry-on. The boom one has gone in checked clothes duffle luggage when my kit was small enough for a 1510.
taylormadeaudio
Yeah, have built many PVC boom shipping tubes over the years - I dig the clear tubing though - that's trick. It's gotta be practically bulletproof if you travel a lot - those luggage handlers are monsters. ~tt
jason porter
I used to pack my pole in a tube and then into my suitcase, no issues. I can't see it being an issue in a checked bag.
Ze Frias
I think this could pass TSA check in carry-on because you can actually see what's inside. I would definitely fly with them regardless!
johnpaul215
http://m.ebay.com/itm/271530620995?nav=SEARCH This is where I ordered the clear PVC pipe. It seems to work with standard PVC glue and fits connectors. I figure the rubber caps are enough and don't look shady.
sfxdude
I like that I think I may try to make a few of those myself as I find that with the Windtech Screens they get all damaged and crushed if I try and put the mic in a standard case. Nice ...
Cloud Wang
i still have a long PVC pipe for my ambient pole, it's fine.

johnpaul215
I've been using a white PVC boom pole one for a few years. The short ones are what might look suspicious, that's why I figured the clear tubes are a better idea for the smaller mic versions.
Rick Reineke
I have a White River fly rod case which fits my K-Tec perfect. Cost about $25 when I bought it a few years ago from Bass Pro. Not as cheap as a few pieces of PVC from Home De-pot but $20-30 shouldn't break anyone's bank. "rugged 1000 denier Cordura® material over a tough PVC protective tube. These lightweight, airplane friendly rod tubes are outfitted with YKK zippers, and are lined with nylon for additional padding" See my post and photo from 2011
Todd Weaver
Just don't mention that the mic sounds "like Dynamite" or anything of that nature.. Don't say it is a "killer" piece of kit or that it's "the bomb" for sound.. Never say bomb on a plane.
