Gogo in flight entertainment

I've been flying a lot for work recently, and have been watching movie via gogo's in flight entertainment. Currently it's free on Alaska, although I'm sure they will start charging at some point.

What struck me instantly was how excessively compressed the audio was. So much so it was constantly distracting. Background noise was almost as loud as the dialog, then would duck out completely when people would talk. All low frequency content was very distorted. The movies sounded TERRIBLE.

I can see how it would be beneficial to reduce the dynamic range since we are listening in an incredibly noisy environment, and most people don't have nose canceling or high isolation headphones. But seriously, I'm not sure anyone qc'd these movies after compression. The clipping type distortion alone would stand out to most any viewer.

</end rant>
