Marc Wielage
Harlan's a bright guy, and I'm with him 100%. It's astonishing the sense of entitlement you run into with people making "personal projects," where they feel the actors, the cinematographer, the sound department, and everybody else all need to work for free (or insulting rates) to fulfill their dream. Jim Feeley
I love that Harlan bit. And agree with Marc. When I struck out on my own years ago, a wise person said something like "the most difficult clients are those who are spending their own money or fulfilling their own dream." I think that's been mostly true. Some passion projects I've worked on have been fantastic all around. Some, even those helmed by people with many years of experience in the craft and producing great work on someone else's tab, have been needlessly difficult (as opposed to justifiably difficult, which I tolerate better). Philip Perkins
This is the famous Mike Montiero "Fuck you: pay me" video. Really good stuff--although Mike Montiero is a web design guy the situations are very familiar. Good advice on being business-like as a freelancer or small company, legal crap etc etc. Highly recommended.
AVUrlacher
Thanks for sharing Philip. That was entertaining and sage advice. The situations shared here are very familiar, and situations that independent contractors shouldn't take lightly. The Montiero video is about 40 minutes long, but the 1st half hour is worth watching.
