On set Metadata question

What type of metadata do you enter on set and in what " format"?

Here in Sweden it's mostly slate/scene (entered in the scene data) take and then any additional info like PU for pickup, example 0021/44/4 PU or 0021/44/IV PU.

Is this similar or very different where you work?

Examples and if possible the reasoning behind the how and why is much appreciated!

Is this really a euro/US divide or is it different within US?

Here in Europe. I know it's different, but the above is what I see here most of the time.

Erik, I would talk to post and ask them what metadata they want and how they want it entered. The data generally gets changed by the assistant editor anyway, but it never hurts to get it right when it's initially created. And that goes for all track names, too -- the dialogue editors will appreciate that.

Marc, its almost always the same here. Im really just curious how it differs in various areas and countries and use cases and how it may or may not affect workflows.

And I am all post, and really only go outside to record sound effects :-). But I try to stay as aware of on set issues and solutions as I can. The more I know about on set differences in workflow and tech etc the more it may help me in post.

Hi Erik,

To help you a little more; here we have this: Lets say one scene.

Scene 1 / Slate 1 / Take 1

Scene 1 / Slate 1 / Take 2

...

Scene 1 / Slate 2 / Take 1

Scene 1 / Slate 2 / Take 2

...

The "Slate" here is when the frame of camera has changed. "Slate 1" for example is wide. "Slate 2" for medium and so on. A typical workflow is: Script says "Scene 1, Slate 1 (plan), Take 1, Sound 1". Script or Mixer says the file number of audio clip (depends if camera has wireless feed from mixer or mic itself).

TV Drama follows 3/5-1-1 : Translated: Episode 3, Scene 5, Slate 1, Take 1

I don't know yet if this is good or bad, but seems everyone love it. Sometimes my OCD want to kill it and follow the US style, but it is what it is.

As for audio channels: Channel 1 - Boom, Channel 2 - Lav etc

For me it's always been Scene Slate Take

And in Metadata there SHOULD be track names and notes at least. I mean sometimes it's not possible due to time, but with the 664 for example it's really simple to edit those things even in a hurry.

Wave Agent is a great software if you didn't have the time on set.

I never name tracks or input notes. On the projects I work on, there's an assistant editor whose job it is to organize sound and picture.

I do a paper report, which still generates less paper than electronic reports in most cases (they print them). My report holds almost 50 takes on one standard sheet of paper, so much less paper than multiple copies of printed "electronic" reports.

I input slate (scene number). That's it. Of course the metadata still includes things like take number, time code and roll number. But those are generated by the machine.

I get all the info I can or that the recorder makes into a wave agent PDF report.  We can't do paper reports any more for a long time because reports are expected to be digital files that can live in the folders with the audio files and be transferred with them.  The posties I work with never print out the reports--they look at them on their laptops or ipads while cutting, ditto for the transcribos.

In this day and age it is pretty much expected that you submit consistent data on your sound reports and even more importantly the metadata on the files themselves. I would be looked at sideways if I turned in audio files with incorrect or no metadata explaining what is what.
