Matthew Bacon - Follow Cart

Jeff Wexler

Recommended Posts

Matt Bacon, UK SoundMixer, has built a new follow cart using aluminum profiles. Unique design with large wheels that can be mounted either inboard or outboard. Several of my sound carts have inboard wheels providing a really narrow footprint.

If you haven't already, you can view this cart and hundreds more at the Gallery of Sound Carts

Thank you it is 90% aluminium so surprisingly light and highly manoeuvrable. It compliments my two other sound carts (RED - a bag cart & BLUE - a drama cart). Prototypes are all (or have been) in the field being put through their paces by Production Mixers. I'm hoping to launch in July/Audust this year at www.soundcart.tv.

If you have any ideas, feature requests, comments or suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Hey, Matt, I thought you might like to see the inboard wheels on my present sound cart. This particular cart (Number 8 I've built) started out with normal traditional outboard wheels which are the easiest to do. After 2 movies I decided to cut up the lower parts of the cart, add a cross brace and move the wheels inboard. Much nicer, much better clearance width wise, and the only comment I hear all the time is about stability --- I really have never had a problem moving the cart around and it has never started side to side tipping or anything like that.

I know someone is going to ask about all that cable hanging off the sides and back of the cart. This is because we're still going duplex cable for the booms and I have 2 duplex cables that ride on the cart at all times.

Great job Jeff. What size wheels are they?

Yes stability was a concern but in my initial testing it did not tip left or right. Due to its short wheel base on rough terrain there was a tendency to tip forward (if the front casters get caught). However, on the flat it ran very

smoothly and on rough terrain simply tip it back onto the large 14" wheels for a bump free journey.

I have small wheels on the front, as do so many of these carts. The instinct is to push with the handles (aka cable hangers), which is never easier and always runs the risk of the small wheels getting caught in something and causing the cart to want to fall over.

I have always pushed my cart from the smart wheel side (without the handles), which offers a great deal more stability over rough terrain. I only control the cart from the "handle" side when negotiating up curbs or stairs.

Very nice, Matt.

Are you talking about actual specs yet ?

Your website is under development, so I was anxious to know dimensions, weight, and price.

Very interested !

best

No the final specs have yet to be determined but we are close. While the website is still under development please visit www.facebook.com/soundcart for further details.

Although we are still refining the designs for launch, the estimated entry prices are as follows:

Red Cart £499.99+VAT

Blue Cart £899.99+VAT

Yellow Cart £799.99+VAT

With regards to weight it is roughly 20-24kg without the drawers (which are 11kg).

That's surprisingly heavy, it looks so light! I was just starting to consider this as a main cart, rather than a follow cart, but now the weight may be off-putting. Although, I should perhaps weigh my own cart first.

I'd be interested to know what weight your current cart is (and the model).

I have a Red and Blue cart currently here while I modify them for their next field test. The Red cart with three shelves (mild steel not aluminium) is 14kg* and the Blue cart is 15kg*.

I don't have a Yellow here at the moment. With the Blue weighing 15kg it is likely the Yellow is circa 20kg (without drawers).

As a comparison:

Rastorder SU is quoted as 32kg

Rastorder Foldup is quoted as 14kg

Rastorder VK is quoted as 25kg

Magliner Gemini is quoted as 20kg

PSC Eurocart is quoted as 13kg

RocknRoller Multi-Cart "Max" R10RT is quoted as 14kg

* These are subject to change

Thanks Matt, my old steel Trakker cart which is comparable with the red is all up (rubber matts, basket etc.) 15.8Kg.

It would be nice to go a bit lighter still than red's 14Kg.

Though the Trakker has no rackmount provision, it's only 18" wide

Could there be an option for aluminium (USA spelling doesn't like the extra i ) shelves?

I have investigated aluminium shelving. The bottom (of the Red) shelf would be unsuitable for aluminium from a structural point of view as it would most likely buckle.

It it is a trade off between keeping the price down and keeping them as light weight as possible.

Thanks for the weight of the trakker I didn't have that.

Further weight comparisons:

FilmTools 24"x36" Junior Cart is quoted as 59kg

FilmTools Thin Profile Junior Sound Cart is quoted as 65kg

Studio Carts Sound Cart SOU-101 is quoted as  25kg

Backstage Equipment Magliner Mini MAG-01 is quoted as 31kg

Anyone know the weight of the FilmTools Junior and/or Senior Vertical carts?

Hi Matt, sorry, I didn't mean to sidetrack you with the weight issue. I built my cart myself and I'm a actually relatively happy with it, except for the weight, which is why I'm looking at yours. I have included a picture below*. Fully packed my cart weighs about 50kg, but empty it's about 25kg. All in all this is the absolute max for me, but I don't know yet how to reduce weight. I insist on the side panels (hence my interest in your cart) but that adds a lot. So with your cart I would gain a smaller footprint and better build quality, but weight-wise it'd be about the same.

But I'm definetely still interested. How many ru is it high? Can that be increased? What do you think how soon you have these carts ready for sale? Have you got a door or something for it? Any other accessories?

* I have deleted the pictures again, as they were relly bad and dark. Will remedy soon

Don't worry about sidetracking. It was an interesting and worthy question and has reassured me that my carts will be some of the lightest available when they come to market.

The side panels on the Yellow cart will be an option (so those that don't want it can choose not to have them). They are made of foamex so extremely light so you'd gain very little in weight loss by removing them. The single heaviest components are the wheels.

I'm happy to hear your are interested in a cart. The Yellow cart is 16u high in the main section with a further 3u available for monitors etc. below the rear handles. I'm not intending to offer the option to customise the structural dimensions (as this sharply increased prices). However in the future I may offer a bespoke service.

I do not have any doors yet designed for the Yellow cart as it was primarily designed as a follow / utility cart rather than a sound cart (but I can see why many like yourself might want to use it such a way) so will start to look into that.

Other accessories include a coffee cup holder, cable hooks and headphone holder. I'm also looking into various mounting solutions for rack mounting gear such as mixers etc. these are not custom made like Chinhda but rather off the shelf solutions (the costs of developing are simply too high especially when he has done them so well!). Any must have accessories?

I'm intending to launch in late July/early August and will be updating the website and Facebook page.
