Pete the link just goes to the Monoprice site.

Do you mean these? Come in pairs with with cardioid capsules as standard?

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=115&cp_id=11502&cs_id=1150201&p_id=600700&seq=1&format=2

seems like the original link had a few "amp;" escape characters sneaked in... if you remove those you'll end up with exactly the same link as you've found, ie:

When posting links it is agood idea to use the LINK tool in the post editor bar. This helps avoid any parsing of the full link when it is posted just as text.

And hypers ($25 each) were substituted for testing?

Yup, sorry, didn't test the link, but those are it

So the conclusion of all this is... buy $50 chinese microphone and keep in $10 waterproof cigar case.

Angelo,

no, the conclusion is the CMIT and the DPA 4017b are damn fine mics (the Schoeps barely winning on sound, DPA handily winning on price) CS3e a solid contender as well. The mkh 416, though a standard mic, sounds harsh compared to the others tested.

for the hypers, the CMC6-MK41 and the MKH-50 were the fan favorites, the 8050 sounded good (but different than the 50), but if not in a good shockmount is very susceptible to handling noise. The CCM41 sounded similar to the CMC6-MK41, but didn't have as nice of off axis fall off.

So, big surprise, the mics that we picked, already have the reputation of being good mics.

We also compared more "low end" offerings including the Oktava MK-012, Audix scx1/hc, and the Monoprice 600700. The first 2 mics are often recommended as entry level hyper cardioids. The monoprice mic sounded much nicer than the Audix (in our test), and was similar to the Oktava.

Everyone went into these tests knowing a Schoeps was going to sound good. So the monoprice mic was a crowd pleaser because of its value-per-dollar. Though it won't be a primary mic in anyones kit, the cost is low enough where it can give you usable audio in situations where it is inadvisable to risk your primary equipment.

As for the cigar case: I cannot (and will not) speak for you, but most mixers I've met are always looking for novel ways to protect our equipment, lighten our load, and make our jobs easier. Hell, look at the It's the little things post which has remained moderately active for the past 5 years. Good ideas are good.

+1 on everything said

I was blown away on how well the mono price mic sounded. It a great cheap mic to keep in your kit for a situation where the mic can be damaged.

+1 here too
