Jeff Hall
I saw this in the latest issue of Mix. Large studios by and large are out with typewriters and buggy whips--a bygone era for sure. I'm saddened because I grew up in control rooms and studios. I experienced a lot of magic. But with the democratization of technology, it seems that nowadays anyone with a laptop on a card table can call themselves a studio, and having a Zoom with a cheap mic calls you a sound mixer. We either go with the new reality, or fade away.
ClayPoole
I agree regarding adapting with the times. I came up in large commercial rock studio. Lot's of fun, and a lot of great people in those places. Such a great education in working with people. It seems like the trend is for these places to become private now. Places like Sunset Sound Factory, The Pass etc. Guys that are still operating with a decent budget are leasing these places on yearly contracts. Better than becoming condos or shopping centers.
