Nick Flowers
Even if you haven't seen the whole film, I reckon that this final shot is one of the most moving. From The Third Man.
Jim Feeley
Thanks Nick. Last year we got to see The Third Man in the newly restored 4K version by Deluxe Restoration in a theater with good projection. It was, of course, great. Available on Blu-Ray, but worth seeing on the big screen to make the scene Nick posted and the whole film a better experience (and I'm no "must be in the theater" snob). An easy candidate, but still great:
Jim Feeley
And one that makes a better impression, I think, in the context of the film. But totally memorable:

The Immoral Mr Teas
Since Nic Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth has just been discussed on BBC Radio 4's The Film Programme, I'll nominate the final scene of that film. Also, many films by Borowczyk - who specialised in a chaotic apocalyptic ending - such as Blanche (1971) and Dr Jekyll and Miss Fanny Osborne (1981). Nick Flowers
Re: The Third Man, I remember reading somewhere that some of Anton Karas's zither tracks were recorded in a hotel bedroom...not sure what on: would tape recorders have been available then? Probably a disc recorder. Or maybe a sound camera?? Anyone have any info on this?

In the defense of dialogue holding up a final scene, I propse the Usual Suspects:
