I can think of two flights that I took in the last year that may have been restricted by this policy. It will be interesting to see how they fold this restriction into the requirement for NOT checking lithium batteries into the hold- I'm quite certain I would not want to remove the battery from my Macbook before a flight, seeing as it's built in...
