KGraham045
Anyone familiar with Oade Brothers Audio? I have an Edirol R4Pro and am interested in potientally upgrading the mic pres in the unit for the specific purpose of ambisonics recording. Has anyone done an upgrade? https://www.oade.com/index.html
alenK
The Oades have been upgrading "taper" gear for live music recording for many decades, and are genuine legends in some circles. I have never had any upgrades, but have known the brothers for over 30 years, and think that they operate with sincerity.
Sigitas
I make Marantz PMD-661 Oade FET mode. I very happy with result. For me preamps sounds better than Sound Devices 788 now. Sounds different due to FET transistors. Noise floor is pretty similar. This recorder was lying on the shelf for several years before the update. Now I use it quite often. berniebeaudry
I had a Marantz PMD 661 that I bought from them modified. It sounded great!
Philip Perkins
I came close a few times with various machines, but what held me back was that at that time they would only mod machines you bought new from them (and no used machines), and since I don't live near their shop I had no way to A-B the mod vs an unmodded machine. So the improvement was anecdotal, so to speak... I would consider spending money on upgraded preamps, or a higher fi recorder. A modded Edirol is still an Edirol.
