Helical antennas

There is a good article in Film & Video that features an interview with Paul Ledford who discusses his use of helical antennas.

intro from Film & Video:

"Technological advances in filmmaking don't always manifest themselves in the electronics behind the camera lens or the expanding digital powers harnessed in the post facility. Big advantages can be gained by keeping an eye on new developments in every segment of production and post. For example, before he started working on 12 Rounds, the new action picture produced by WWE Films, directed by Renny Harlin, and starring WWE wrestling star John Cena, production sound mixer Paul Ledford researched an unfamiliar type of RF antenna — a helical antenna — that he saw being used in the Super Bowl. Turns out that while the helical antennas are more expensive, they significantly expanded Ledford's options on location by extending his range."
