Movie Reviews - New & Old

Thought I'd try to start a long-term topic here.  Best to keep them short and and sweet.  Perhaps we can also toss in quick reviews for great films we see again on DVD/cable, or perhaps ones that we might have forgotten about over the years and suddenly remember.

Saw "Sunshine Cleaning" last night.  Very charming and thoughtful.  Well performed and well told story.  Sounded good too, with music adding but not distracting.  Best movie I've seen in a while, I think.

Since Virgin Megastore in NYC hads been going out of business, I find myself there every week or two trolling the $10 dvd bins. I just wrapped a feature with David Strathairn, a great actor, and very personable, so I went on a little kick. Watched GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK. A great historical biopic, and beautifully shot. The mix of new and archival footage is superb.

I also tried to pick up SNEAKERS. A great ensemble film, and fun to boot.

Last movie I saw in the theater was WATCHMEN, and I saw it twice. I love the book, and thought it was very well done. Sticking to the story was the only way it could be done, and it was great.

I guess I've found myself picking up dvd's to watch at home, more than making the trip to a movie theater!

Great idea, can't wait to hear more suggestions/reviews.

The mixer on Sunshine Cleaning was Lori Dovi, who is a terrific person and a fine mixer as well. I handled all the digital dailies on the project, and I agree -- it's an example of how good (and professional) a small indie film can be. The DP was John Toon, who's an absolute gentleman and first-class cinematographer. Good experience all around.

We handled the post on Good Night and Good Luck, and it's amazing to me what a great job the prop guys did on getting all the mikes, TV cameras, and so on exactly right for the 1950s sequences. It drives me crazy when any anachronisms sneak in, but this film pulled this off very well. It was all shot on color negative, too, and they did a great job at giving it an authentic B&W look for the release prints and home video releases.

I saw "Observe and Report" - It's less goofball comedy than you would imagine.  The second half is very dark.  If you happen to go see it, understand from the beginning that the character is supposed to be mentally unstable and not just a moronic asshole.  Even though the lead is played by Seth Rogan (the king of sympathetic, goofy characters), you are not supposed to sympathize.  Allowing the audience to like him was a bit of a mistake.  Other than that it was a really good film.

Obviously I saw "Crank: High Voltage" - I loved it, but that's no secret.  The picture quality was much better than I would have expected, blown up from HDV to 35mm via DI.  I want to mention that this film is intentionally over the top in its violence, vulgarity, racism, misogynism, homophobia and isn't delicate about it.  If you are aware that this is intended to add further "cartoon-factor" to the movie and the character of Chev Chelios, then you'll be fine.  So as much as I would love everyone here to see it, please be warned!!

I watched the movie "The Tribe" during Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

Deaf mute Sergey enters a specialized boarding school for deaf-and-dumb. In this new place, he needs to find his way through the hierarchy of the school's network dealing with crime and prostitution, The Tribe. By taking part of several robberies, he gets propelled higher into the organization. Then he meets one of the Chief's concubines Anna, and unwillingly breaks all the unwritten rules of the tribe.

Won the award "Best Director"

"There are no subtitles and no voice-over, because for Love and Hatred you don't need translation".
