Richard Lightstone, CAS
Just upgraded to my new 15.3" Macbook Pro. My old Powerbook G4 of course had a modem where I could send faxes over my land line. I used FAXstf Pro. What do you recommend for Internet faxing? There are multiple choices that give you a fax phone number and use email. The costs are all over the map, from about $17/mo. down to about $3/mo. Your experiences and advice will be appreciated. Also thoughts on any FW800 - FW 400 hubs, etc. Of course the moment I purchased it, I read that Apple now delivers them with non-reflective screens. I'm used to this. Marc Hoppe
I use myfax.com. The plan I have runs me $10 a month and that gives me 100 pages to fax out and 200 received pages. They let me chose from available local numbers or I could have transferred one over. The faxes are delivered as .pdf files to my email inbox, and I have set up text message alerts for confirmations and notifications of incoming faxes. I have had no problems with them whatsoever. RPSharman
Surely the FAX has gone the way of the pager, but for $120/yr and the chance of missing ONE job because the office doesn't have an email, well worth it. I used eFax a while back. It's easier to use now than it was before, but I have canceled my subscription.
Michael P Clark
Fax?...haven't used one in years. Why not just create pdf's and send it via email? The Mac offer's pdf creation via the print option.
David Waelder
What do you recommend for Internet faxing? There are multiple choices that give you a fax phone number and use email. The costs are all over the map, from about $17/mo. down to about $3/mo. Most of the clients I deal with accept documents sent as e-mail attachments and my fax activity is very much less than it was in past years. Every now and again I encounter an outfit that wants something faxed or wants to be able to fax to me. To accommodate them, I have a fax service from Packatel: http://www.packetel.com/Fax/faxServiceMain.asp I use them exclusively for incoming faxes although they also have an outgoing fax service. They charge me $3.95 per month for incoming faxes and deliver the documents as pdf files to the e-mail account I specify. They also provide a local phone number exclusively for my use. This permits me to provide a fax number to clients and print that number on business cards and other documents. Anyone wanting to fax me simply sends the document to that number and I receive the pdf file. It's entirely seamless. There are a variety of levels of service. I believe my $3.95/month service is one of the cheapest and there is a limit to how many pages of document I may receive in a month without incurring an extra charge. In practice, I never come anywhere near that limit. Unless people are faxing whole scripts, you are quite safe at the lower levels of service. I think there is an extra charge for outgoing faxes. You can send domestically in any normal format for about 7 cents per page. If I must send a fax, I usually just plug a fax machine into my phone line and do it the old fashioned way. The monthly charge is automatically billed to a credit card account I supply. It's been a very satisfactory service for a pretty minimal expense. I just went on-line to check my account. I find I was in error. For $3.95 per month I can receive an unlimited number of faxes. Haven't tested that policy by having someone fax me Darwin's Origin of the Species; I'll leave that to someone else. They now have a feature to alert you via text message, if you like, when a fax comes in. Also, one can pre-pay for three months at a cost of about $12 and try out the service without making a long term commitment. Yes, I do get some sort of credit for referrals (not sure what) but only if I enter your name and e-mail address in a referral page to have them contact you directly. Richard Lightstone, CAS
Thanks all for the tips. I do send most of my resumes via email attaching a PDF. Occassionaly, about 1 out of every 10 only want a fax. Did solve my F/W 800 port -- I bought a simple F/W400 - F/W800 adapter for about $16. Now using 3 fire wire Drives all daisey chained. That 's why I always liked fire wire. I keep trying to post my photos inline --- but no matter how I've tried, I just have not got it to work from me.com/gallery.. KCDavenport
Affordable Online Fax Of course the moment I purchased it, I read that Apple now delivers them with non-reflective screens. I'm used to this. Have to laugh at the irony--happened to me, too. On the topic, I use myfax as well although I am open to exploring other internet fax providers with better pricing if anyone has recommendations. Jan McL
Same dilemma recently, Richard. Went with MyFax.com for $10/month. What I liked about it, was that they give you an actual fax number for incoming faxes. The only times I've had to use it in the last year were for my accountant and for the Teamsters, who always want directions faxed. The capacity to fax was the next-to-last reason for keeping the land line active. Any day now, the land line will go the way of the 8-track tape... The last reason has to do with NYC-related disaster situations wherein cell phone service is disrupted for long periods of time. Worth that $20/month for a telephone security binkie? Maybe. Maybe not.
tcrush
I've used both Cheap Internet Fax and Small Business Fax before, and both have provided great service. I know the first is a bit cheaper than the latter, so good if you are on a budget. If you are willing to spend a little more, and have a small business, the latter is really good for that type of issue.
FrancesB
If it's still relevant, there's Interfax. I don't know much about them but they seem very cheap (0.07$ per fax or something). It might be of use to you.
Michael Miramontes
+2 with myfax.com I've used them for years and never had an issue with losing pages/etc. Customer support is also really good!
stacysound
You can do the same with your new one, if you prefer, with this kind of thing: http://www.amazon.co...duct/B000C6TLDO Ditto this. Works great for the 2 faxes a year I send.
Jeff Babb
I have my fax hooked to a magicjack. Goes with me anywhere. Although it appears this thread was restarted by some "marketeers." Edited November 30, 2011 by Jeff Babb
benr
Ditto this. Works great for the 2 faxes a year I send. Thats pretty cool, but with that youd still need a phone line. Some of us dont have those anymore because they are pretty overpriced and who doesnt have a cell phone these days? Ill have to check out the myfax.com site. That might be what I have been looking for for the very rare occasions when I need to fax.
