Guest Ken Mantlo
As I visit other sets I notice that hardly anyone does it the same. Lets see some pics of your sides hanging!
soundtrane
hey, if you have (been given) (and still kept them) - that is...
old school
We don't have sides in commercials, but if I did a arm like david shows seems a good way to go. CrewC
ve7kjr
Like to tape them on a piece of show card
Michael
Hmm... a whole new realm of cart accessory that I hadn't considered. I usually just spread them across the mixer, my laptop or any other handy flat surface. Rob, perhaps a new option for the rastorder carts to go along with the cup holder. Philip Perkins
I clip a piece of showcard off the right side upright of the cart, and clip the pages to that. Philip Perkins
Richard Lightstone, CAS
Fold each page to edges of the dialog and tape them together. I use highlighter pens to color code each character and use fridge magnets to hold them in place. RL
berniebeaudry
Sides are referring to the script I'm guessing. How come they're called sides? Haven't heard that term before. Bernie
David Waelder
How come they're called sides? Haven't heard that term before. Not sure exactly how the name "sides" came to be but it derives from the practice in Elizabethan plays of providing each performer with only their own lines and the cue lines in and out. So each player would have only their own scenes, their own "side" of the play. Printing in Shakespeare's time was an expensive undertaking. There were no Linotype machines and type had to be set by hand and paper fed into the press by hand. In some cases, sides were probably hand copied rather than printed. Budget cutbacks throughout history. David Waelder Ruth Gordon, a stage actress before she appeared in films, has a very interesting autobiography called "My Side." Bernie Also generally reduced to a 1/4 page size and stapled in the day's shooting order, so they'll fit in a pocket. And thanks, David, for the reference back to the Elizabethan era. chriskellett
In the ugliest shirt I own, I tend to tape them to the monitor. This is a typical TV 4 page long "sides".

I don't see you that often and I've seen you in an uglier shirt than that. JG
RPSharman
Chris' rig looks like what I do. I trim the sides to the dialog only (vertically and horizontally), then tape them to the edge of the rack case.

studiomprd
really good boom operators memorize the script, often better than the actors...
Joshua Anderson
No sides for anyone. A lot of mixers used to be boom ops.
Nicole Hankerson
really good boom operators memorize the script, often better than the actors... Yep that's what I do. The Directors and actors/actresses be looking like wow. Ha ha. It helps me to make sure I pick up the dialogue proper and also lets me know how long I'm going to be holding that darn boom pole. ha ha. Guest Ken Mantlo
Are you kidding? That's why I became a mixer, so I didn't have to memorize dialog anymore .
Thomas Popp
This works until they rewrite the scene you are currently on 3 times while they are shooting it.... No sides for anyone. A lot of mixers used to be boom ops.
hemmerlinj
This works until they rewrite the scene you are currently on 3 times while they are shooting it.... Exactly. When they re-write add 4 more actors and change the location to an extremely noisy exterior. And every bit of dialog is a whisper. Not because it was written that way, but because the actors felt it would be better that way.
RPSharman
And every bit of dialog is a whisper. Not because it was written that way, but because the actors felt it would be better that way. Quieter is better. It makes the character seem more serious, therefore better acting. Soon the dialog will be replaced with the serious stare. This should work fine since actors can barely hear each other these days anyway, since they are all acting so well. Robert

Rob Stalder
Michael - your new accessory - well old actually. These pictures are of PK's SU cart few years back. He used a section of metal mesh held to the side upright with cable ties - adjustable by selecting the appropriate square. Hangs on side of cart when not in use. Very innovative of PK. Richard Lightstone, CAS
Ok geeks... I said I use fridge magnets to hold my sides in place. Well I just got these nifty iPhone icon fridge magnets! I'm not an iPhone fan, just like mac iconography. http://www.jailbreaktoys.com/App_Magnets_p/mgapp00.htm RL
