Mike Borlace
I have 2 questions about yesterday's Super Bowl. 1) Prince's concert at half time was in the rain with no roof or protection over the stage. With all the electrical sound and lighting equipment on stage, would that not have been a huge safety issue? 2) The TV cameras had rain on the lenses throughout the game. I have seen in a rental house a motorized spinning disk to go in front of a camera lens to protect it from water. Don't these devices work and why wouldn't they have been used on such a huge show? I'd be more interested to see what they did with the mix point. The one for the Stones last year was huge and would have been a real pain in the ass to get under cover. 2) Yeah, the rain and the smears were really annoying and I was only watching in SD, can't imagine what they looked like in HD! Guess it would all depend on if those lens spinners would fit the size/type of lenses they were using. I would bet they don't make one big enough for a box lens. curleysound
The Spintec RD210 is made for box lenses: <img src="http://www.zgc.com/zgc.nsf/spintec_rd210%20c_small.jpg?OpenImageResource"> http://www.zgc.com/zgc.nsf/product/spintec Scroll down to see it... I imagine they decided against adding the several thousands of dollars to the budget. Weren't there over 40 cameras? Of course, that is how much they make per second off the commercials, so, who knows?
JP Evans
I thought it looked unprofessional to come back from commercial to a high wide shot of a kickoff, and the lens was covered in water. They had at least two minutes to wipe down a lens they knew they were coming back to. Seems to me a simple hood would keep most of the water off. Prince sounded great, his guitars had real tone! old school
Greetings All. Prince was wireless with his guitar n voc mic so he was safe. Hard to say how safe the band was. My guess is that they were covered as well as alot of the lights, mics, and amps on the main stage. But who gives a flying F### about the gear. The performance and mash up of songs that Prince did was mind blowing as we said back in my day. All live and real. I thought the weather and its effect on the event made it more real, less slick/sick. Of course I saw the replay that night when I got home from work and may have been, well.... Early call tomorrow. Out. Crewc
Guest Jeff Colon
Hello, Superbowl like so much else has endorsement deals you might never notice... one year i remember a "Cannon" lens issue. Cannon had provided all of the lenses with the provision that they were the exclusive lens used for the broadcast... with a couple nice shots of the cameras with the logo/billboard showing... Turns out that lens control cables for jib arms are not interchangeble between Fuji and Cannon, sony and ikegami. There was one "renegade" lens on that show wearing a bit of gaffer tape... this kind of bs is a possible reason for wet & fogged lenses... CBS has had this issue all year... I guess if enough soundos complain. ;-) The saftey issue is very real. I witnessed the (preventable) death of a halftime performer during a rehearsal (the bungee was a few inches too long)... also a performer with a badly broken arm after being crushed against a wall by a set piece being rolled onto the field... what ever happened to Marching Bands ? SOP for shows these days is to use a meter to check for potential from gear to ground. being wireless negates most of this concern. I'm sure no one was happy working wet. Prince did have a cool doo rag protecting his coif though... could someone pass the Doritos, please. Jeff C
