Andy Rooney on Bill Gates

Bill Gates doesn't build computers. He makes software. No wonder poor old Andy has problems if he doesn't realize the difference.

All of the computers Andy was talking about run Bill Gates' software --- without Microsoft Windows the computers are just a bunch of components (hardware). As for Bill Gates not building computers, you are right, Microsoft does not build the hardware. But, if you know anything about the history of Microsoft and its relationship to the companies that DO build the computers, Microsoft is the company that is running the show. So, whether Andy understands that there is hardware (the computer) and software (Bill Gates, Microsoft), and there is a difference, it is irrelevant --- he is talking about computers which you must admit YOU understand is hardware and software.

He was complaining about the off button being in physically different places on different computers. I doubt Bill Gates mandated that.

Actually, Andy was also complaining about the computer popping up warnings asking you what you wanted to do after you hit the Shut Down button. And also asking why the Shut Down command was located in the "Start" menu.

These are actually good questions, and they do relate directly to Windows. I agree that Microsoft has very little to do with hardware and off switches, but Rooney's perplexity with computers is understandable and I can relate to it.

How old is that video? Andy was complaining about Windows 98 and hey... it's 2011. On a modern Windows or Apple computer, you click the company logo to shut it down... so what's the big deal. And he's complaining about where the On/Off switch is? For cryin' out loud, the On/Off switched gets moved every time you buy a new TV or phone or toaster oven.
