saw this on my twitter feed this morning. usb only? any luck with boom recorder going usb? i see a lot of board mixers nowadays only being usb.

I could be wrong, but the 01V96 Ver.2 was replaced by the 01V96 VER, (effects added), then the newer 01V96i with the added capability of the USB.... They all I believe have added capability as the line moves on... I don't think anything is lost, just features added... since it is a hardware issue.... (USB) it is not upgradable through software...

My little piggy runs hot normally, or very warm.... not too happy about the black, but who knows.... I still think this is by far the best bang for your buck mixer out there... hands down.... For you minimalist guys out there... (tiny cart guys and girls) not so much...

I KNOW MANY ALREADY KNOW THIS BUT, a few may not... so...

The shear amount of "stuff" that can be accomplished with the 01V96 is mind blowing... as is the learning curve.... at least for me.... whew.... but once learned, what a great piece of gear...

It reminds me a bit of the huge amount of routing possibilities, and operational options of the Nomad, so much can be done, but on your console... routing, delay, comp./ Lim... (Like a DBX comp. /lim.? dial one up, it's there..Mocked version..)... pre set EQs (mics) or events (Scenes) (ever do a little live sound?), Set up the console for any type of gig, live or production sound... any configuration, save it as a scene, and recall it whenever you want, completely saves and puts everything in place the way you wanted it at the push of a few buttons.. For Mic EQ, just pull them up on your SEL button for a particular channel,, hit EQ, and pick your favorite mic.... You pre set them up the way you like a mic to sound, save the setting, name it (Senn. 416 for example, and your done...gets you to your pre set EQ point.... so fast and easy... You will now have a list of all your mics all saved.... throw a Sanken on someone on channel 4, hit SEL, EQ, roll to the page, and select Sanken... Done.. Very fast once you know how...

Need delay for that pesky "video ahead of your audio for those watching on monitors?..Go to your Aux out for comteks, many options for your outputs..or the like, go to the delay page.... and simply dial up your delay until the people stop whining.... no "shark" necessary....

With all the pricy consoles out there, I love this one... it's size and the AC thing bugs people, not me, I always have AC... and I love the console, so I don't care about the size...at all... It's never bothered me...

Oh yeah, it sounds great, headroom is fine as well, never any problems in that regard...

Hope this was helpful for those that do not know about this console... for the price point, I may buy another one just because... keep my Ver. 2 as a backup... or for another cart...

Well ..... that was weird... Me both posts... anyway, if the USB already exists on the console in a HARD fashion, why cant the software be updated to allow the recording through that already installed USB for data and software back-up?

I have always loved the yamaha line, as Mr. Harber knows all too well, from using DM2000s on reality shows. I'm curious about USB3 though. I was always told to NEVER use USB for real time data like recording sound, because USB bogged down the processor while firewire had it's own processing built into it's card. Does USB 3 solve this problem, or was i misinformed about this?

My answer is that it's all in the firmware of the device. I record 24 channels of 24/48 audio with ease for hours and hours via USB2 on a JoeCo BBR. The same is true of RME's boxes, including the USB output of the UFX which can record 24 channels directly off the interface without a computer in the chain. I did not have such great luck with USB + laptop+interface in the same sort of config I used with firewire.

I like the Yamahas, too. One great thing about them is that the menus on all the various models (going back to the 02R) are kind of similar, so if you learn one, you can kind of fumble your way through the others. I really, really liked the ability to store presets in the 03D and the DM1000. The later mixers started providing the ability to put tons of delays in, which were very helpful in post when we had to deal with simultaneous HD and standard-def feeds for film dailies -- though this is no longer a factor in a file-based world.

I've been using the O1V 96v2 on the cart for almost 5 years and I'd love to keep using it. USB I/O is a nice addition giving extra routing capabilities, etc. But I'd personally like to see an upgraded preamp allowing for higher dynamic range. Currently the O1V is passing gain at 105dB dynamic range, while most high end location sound gear offers preamps rated between 115-120dB. The extra headroom helps for those annoying "whisper whisper, LOUD LOUD" scenes we all hate, plus it certainly makes a difference with sound quality.

When we mix with our yamaha panels giving us "110dB typ. DA Converter (STEREO OUT) / 105dB typ. AD+DA (to STEREO OUT) @fs=48kHz / 105dB typ. AD+DA (to STEREO OUT) @fs=96kHz (specifications off yamaha website)", we're working with 105dB of input gain that is clean, but compared to other location specific panels and location recorders with control surfaces, we're between 10-15dB short of the best possible performance. I've been thankful to be able to make it work for this long, with moments of cringing from time to time, but I would like to be able to raise the bar a bit while keeping the flexibility of the O1V.

What do you guys think?

Yup I agree, great interface workflow features etc, crappy pres. Yamaha needs a new engineer or to buy some tech off another company, Allen and Heath and Midas make fantastic pres for their boards but they don't compare to yamahas price or flexibility.

Glad to see I'm not the only Yammy pre hater here. Have you guys tried the DM1000 or 2000 then? It has a completely different micamp front end, built to spec for some European clients who focussed on classical music for one. I imagine the interface should be familiar enough for an "O" user.

I have used the DM1000, and I appreciate the longer-throw motorized faders. Many, many, many buttons, which may be intimidating to some users, plus it's a huge mixer in terms of size (compared to the 01V96). I loved the presets, and it was a big improvement in sound quality and set up ease compared to the 03D, which I used for many years in post.

This is an old thread, but I thought I would bring it back to life.

I've been looking at the 01V96I as a possible replacement to my current Zaxcom Cameo.

I have a gig coming up where I'm going to need more in and outs then the Cameo can handle.

I've been torn between the 01V96I or the LS9-16.

A local rental house has the LS9-16 as part of there rental fleet so I was going to give it go in a few weeks. But they don't rent the YDGAI cards. So, since my choices were down to the two Yamaha boards anyways, I figured I would buy the expansion card to use with the rental and then even if I decide to go with the 01V96I the card would still be of use.

But, when I went to purchase the expansion card (MY16-AE) I was told there is no more stock and it is discontinued ! Apparently Yamaha says there is little demand for the AES format.

I'm very happy with my recorder and it's digital input is AES, so I'm looking for another mixer solution. I suppose I could scour the internet to find some leftover stock, but if Yamaha is discontinuing cards with AES does this mean the format is being replaced by something else ? Dante ? SDI embeded audio ?

Searching the web, I find that there are many third party companies that have the MY 16 AE in stock.

The Dante card will work well with a DAW, however if you re interfacing with a DEVA or SD or any other machine with an AES D- sub this card will be much more versatile.

Of course the advantage of the 01V96i is the 16 digital I/O via USB to also connect to many computer DAW programs.

You could also check with Trew Audio, LSC, TAI and many other sound related sales companies.

Regarding perceived deficiencies with the O196One active member here has reported having long-term great results using the built-in DBX-160 "simulator" efx on mic channels.

I happened in on a studio comedy series here locally (dedicated control room, not cart) where the mixer utilized the Aphex 188 eight channel preamp in his setup - I was stunned by the quality I was hearing on his monitor speakers. I'm not sure how much additional draw it would have on ones' cart power-scheme, but certainly worth a look / hear....

Thanks. yes you are correct, I have found other sources with stock of the MY16AE card.

I guess I was more contemplating what it means (if anything) that a company as large as Yamaha is discontinuing the production of the AES card. Does it mean we are moving to a different standard ? Or is it simply the music industry and/or home studio market that is not interested in the AES products anymore and Yamaha is trying to target that market.

Still, the 01v96 looks to be a good choice and I look forward to learning the ins and outs of that very capable machine.
