Simon Paine
OK, so I know I read somewhere that there is a difference, but I don't remember what it is. I just put a USB plug into my soundcart and it can charge most things with a USB connection, except my Iphone. What's different about the Iphone USB connection ? Anyone know if it would be the same with the Iphone 4S ?
gpiegari
As I understand it, the iPhones need to see some kind of signal on the data lines, not just the 5v power. If you google it, lots of folks have schematics and youtube how-to videos explaining how to build the hack...
stacysound
The only unique charging scheme on the iPhones (not including iPods) was the original iphone
soundslikejustin
iPhone 3GS and 4 (and I assume 4S) all want to see 2.8v and 2v on each of the 'unused for charging' data pins of the USB connector to charge at 1A, and 2v on both data pins to charge at 500mA. No voltage on either or both data pins will cause the iPhone to reject the charge voltage.
benr
You have to be careful when buying an iDevice USB cable now a days. It used to be that most cable manufacturers provided charge current on the FireWire power pins. A few years ago Apple announced to the industry that they were going to stop allowing that and have done so, but many older style cables are still out there that only provide connection on the FireWire pins for power. On top of that as soundslikejustin mentioned, Apple pulled out the ol USB spec and found themselves a tricky way to setup their devices to charge. Some say it was done to force people to buy their cables, other say it was better set themselves up for higher current chargers so that the devices could charge faster.
