  2. Happy birthday, Jeff! This is a good day for us to show our appreciation by donating some $$ and help keep this place going! There’s a link on the front page.
  3. Hey all, it's been a good eight years since this topic was touched. Curious if anyone's found a particularly effective insert/software for removing camera motor sounds? Context: Currently on a film with a fair amount of close ups (and camera) in quiet atmospheres. As others have mentioned, director would prefer to avoid ADR if possible, but if them's the dice then...
  4. Hey all, as it's been a few years I checked in with Lectro HQ about any updates: *Card Door: (update) Swapped out for a similar but more robust redesign. Repairs dept. also said they'd be glad to send out spares of the updated door. *Limiter: Hasn't changed since 2018, except in the display: (via 2022 firmware update: ) "The SPDR now conforms to industry standards for digital audio metering: the meter always reads 0 at +0 dBFS. The analog input limiter can now be seen to engage at -5 dBFS, reserving 5 dB for limiter overhead. This behavior of the analog input subsystem has not changed, but now the meter always shows the levels relative to +0 dBFS. This eliminates the possibility for confusion caused by the meter reading differently depending on the input type (digital or analog) and whether the SPDR is making a recording or playing one back" * Low Cut Filter: No shift, 35Hz is the closest the SPDR provides to turning filter off (cutting 20-35Hz range) *Timecode format: No change

  6. I think he means how the Easyrig has rigid hooks that hold the bag, so it is easy to take the bag on and off instead of unclipping 6 carabiners. I have always wanted something like this as well. I have both the Orca and Ktek waist belt and I find both of them super uncomfortable. Even the smallest bag, I found the mixer sat too low and kind of prevented me from being able to walk properly.
  7. An additional question: Were you ok with having the bag low on your body? I prefer having the bag at chest level; I find it is easier on my back. But I'm curious how a belt rig would change the weight distribution.
  8. Olle, great thought. I'd love to know what people think so I started a new thread:
  9. [That's a quote from Olle in this thread. I'm replying in this new thread because I'd love to read people's experiences and thoughts on this approach -- Jim] Olle, I might be misreading your thought, but I too think a belt might work since for me (my bags are small (633, a few RX, a TX, etc...maybe something smaller soon). Two belts I know of: K-Tek KSWB1 – Stingray Waist Belt https://ktekpro.com/product/kswb1-stingray-waist-belt/ ORCA OR-370 Advanced Audio Waist Belt https://www.orcabags.com/product/or-370-advanced-audio-waist-belt/ Who here has used belts with bags? How big a bag worked...and what size was just too big? Overall, what did you think? A sometimes solution, the way you like to go, just didn't work for you?
  10. At my work we have a good collection of T-powered as well as P-48 powered 415's, 416's, 435's, 815's and 816s and I have not noticed any significant difference in noise-floor relative to the powering scheme across this selection spanning close to 50 years. Having said that I am not sure I'd call any of them "low noise" when comparing them with newer MKH series microphones. I love these mics for what they do well but on occasion I had to replace them in the field for quieter, higher output variants.
  11. I can't say enough good things about TXAdvance. I have been using it for 2 years. It is instrumental in scanning and finding clear frequencies, coordinating my 8 wireless transmitters and troubleshooting RF hits in LIVE active mode when some new RF source walks onto set. I have used several RF apps before using this one. For a location sound mixer there is simply no better product. I know several Apple device users who have purchased Android tablets just to use TXAdvance. Plus Grégoire is very responsive to feature suggestions. I highly recommend his app. In its current version it is very mature and feature packed.
  12. And thanks for all you've done for us, and for me personally. Jim
  13. Thanks Cody- that’s a good place to start!
  14. Great answers, thanks a lot Documentary Sound Guy I was just browsing that DY thread and your comments there before noticing the answers here. Very good personal website you have also I realized that part of my confusion was that old publications didn't use the A-weighted curve as noise measurement standard. They used instead some DIN 45590, which seems consistent with the CCIR468 values published in the latest specs of the 416-U3. I also found a magazine from 1983 that mentions the 416-T3 already, so you are right guessing that T-3 is not a newer version. It remains a mystery what T-3 stands for, but all 416 seem to have around the same noise floor on paper. Only 1dB quieter the "T" version in the old manuals. There is a historical moment when the quartz crystal changed to PLL, or when the KS15 capsule changed for the KS16, or when SMD components started being used instead. But no idea when exactly these changes went happening or if they rendered into measurable or perceptible changes. @Patrick Farrell Could you please share your suggestion on DC-DC converter (and if possible some implementation schematic)? I did some shy research attempts already, since that would allow me to use a wide range of new mikes in the future. Even though I'm anyways curious about how the 'T' will sound without any conversions directly from batteries.
  15. If I attached my Easyrig Minimax, which takes up to 7kg (15.4lb), to a mixer bag instead of a camera the bag would feel almost weightless. I’d be able to guide the bag with a couple of fingers. The Easyrig for boom poles is designed differently, but Hellsten appears to be saying that it has a positive effect on the apparent weight of a mixer bag.
  16. Yup, most manufacturers do it ..just look at the difference between the Schoeps SuperCMIT in its ordinary 'Preset 1' mode (which provides some reduction in rear sensitivity over other shotguns) and 'Preset 2' (rather more severe cutback) which almost totally eliminates rear sensitivity (but makes the mic sound rather 'boxy' as if in a small almost anechoic room ..that's if used indoors, of course)..

  19. Possible de-rail but also, I think, interesting: which one is more explosive? Fuel or battery powered generators?
  20. I just liked the way the mixer bag hung off of the hooks. Imagine a thick belt or girdle you wear around your hips, and you'd hang the bag on that instead of having straps over your shoulders, so no harness per se. I don't know if it'd actually work but it seems like a nice solution. I think I'd buy it

  22. Since you already have the phantom powered version and are happy with it's SNR, I'd recommend adding a phantom power section to your homebrew preamp. It's really quite simple, I built one in an altoids tin. I've tested several dc boost converters that can take your existing battery voltage and get it up to 48 if you'd like recommendations.

  24. This repair manual shows the circuitry differences between two different variants of the 416T, with and without an oscillator crystal. It's not totally clear if these variants can be identified by model number ... both circuit diagrams list the T and T3 variants (there are also TU and TU-3 variants, but the only difference there is the output connector, DIN vs. XLR; "U" designates XLR). I'm not 100% sure what the "3" designates in the model number, but I don't believe it necessarily denotes a revision. I'm afraid I don't know enough of the history to directly answer the question about when the phantom version may have changed, or what those changes may have been. You might get useful information by asking on GroupDIY. There's a thread about the 416T. I notice someone else has also asked about noise floor differences between the T and Phantom versions. 416T Repair Manual & Schematic.pdf

  26. Hi! I'm new to the group thanks for letting me in. I'm into filmmaking and sound for film, with particular interest lately in audio electronics. I'm looking for a shotgun to use with a preamplifier circuit I made myself running on 12-9V battery power, so I'm trying to skip phantom power. So far I've only used electrets with it, but discovering recently that some condenser mikes take lower voltages (P12, T-power). Quite interested currently to try on a T-powered 416, since I have a 416-P48U already and, even though off axis sounds spooky sometimes, it is very low noise. I really dislike hiss because I record details quite amplified. I'm thinking to sell it and get a 416-T, but here is the question... is it really as quiet as the 416-P48U? My main doubt is because of age and how capsules and electronics evolved over time. The old manual of the 416-T states a SNR of ca. 73dB. The old manual of the 416-P48U shows even noisier 72dB. But then there is the modern 416P-48U3, SNR 81dB, excellent. I think that the 416-T was produced until the early 2000's. There is a version named 416T-3, which might correspond to the later version, but it also says 72dB on the manual. So, when did the famous 416-P48U get from 73dB to 81dB? Was it when it changed series from 416-P48U to 416-P48U3? Did the 416-T get also less noise over the years, for instance from version 416-T to 416-T3, but they didn't print out that difference for some reason? I'm just appealing to experiences here between these models and sub-models, for I've seeing some mentions to them. Before I mess up doing a wrong purchase and look for other options. Sorry for the long introduction and sophisticated question beforehand! I contacted Sennheiser but they didn't write back on the topic yet. Regards from Berlin, Domingo
  27. Wow I hadn't seen those freq distinctions in a diagram before! I wish every maker did that. (Heh, do they already do this now?) All these years my ears have told me just how much of a giant rear lobe that mic has, in fact to me it's practically an omni at those lower freqs. Thanks for posting! Dan Izen
