Curious to know what other sound mixers are using when it comes to carrying accessories on you when on your feet and small recorder bags. Talking with other production people about break-ins and backpacks being stolen etc lately freaks me out about backpacks. I personally had experienced a huge loss a few years ago where our van was broken into and they climbed over the most expensive stuff in cases to go for all the soft bags n backpacks. I realize there’s no way to be 100% theft proof but I have since then started putting any soft bags inside pelican cases and looping theft deterrent cabling through the handles etc. but there’s something very specific about a backpack t…

Who hasn't said these exact words? 😀 (Not sure I got the mic model correct. But I'm sure that's a Fender Bass VI)

Has anyone tried a few yards of thick fake fur on cardboard instead of furniture blankets for a highly reverberant acoustic space? Half Yard Shaggy Faux Fur Fabric Synthetic Plush Craft Patch Sewing Fur Cuts FabricLA-Shaggy-Faux-Fake-Fabric Long Pile Shaggy Faux Fur Squares Fabric Fuzzy Material Cuts Patches Craft DIY Supply Costume Decoration Even when having to put up a 2 wall space for a quick voiceover. Not just walls but say in a bathroom has anyone tried scraps of this fake fur on the floor? Did it help anymore than say a furniture packing blanket on the ground or clamped to the top of the shower curtain loop?

Does anyone here work on these types of shows? Watching it I am just amazed at how clean everything sounds, no matter what the costume. Lots of open shirts with hairy chests, very tight low cut dresses etc. And plenty of moving/jumping around. Always sounds perfect. I'd love to hear from someone who works on these and how it's managed!

As time goes by I'm building up my microphone selection and I was thinking about getting a second shotgun mic. Mainly for two reasons. On the one hand to have an alternative to my current one (an MKH8060) with which I'm very happy. And on the other hand to be able to swing a second boom mic, if necessary. But if you swing 2 mics it would be nicer if they match (no EQing necessary). So getting a second identical mic could probably be the better choice. But then I won't have an alternative, in cases my current one doesn't work so well So baisically, I think I will go with a different one. Simply because swinging two boom mics will happen rarely. But just for cu…

It seems Lectrosonics has stopped making the MCA-Tpower cable, which allows using the 15V power selection to drive a 12T microphone (like a CMC4). Other than the fairly long 48P-12T barrel adapters and the Ambient Phantomizer cable ($176!?), does anyone have any other suggestions for how to make this happen? I already have Gary at Trew Atlanta building something smaller for me, but I was hoping to get that Lectro cable. I guess I haven’t been active here in so long I can’t post to the WTB forum, but if anyone has an MCA-Tpower cable for sale, I’d love to buy it. Thanks!

Hi Jw. I’ve been a long time lurker on this site and credit it with teaching me countless things. I don’t often post, because I’m mainly here to listen BUT I would love to hear the communities opinions on delivering files when working with Zaxcom recorders. On productions I work with DITs want WAV files and they want them right when we wrap. I’ve heard more than a few of my colleagues have issues where data was either corrupted or takes were missing or other nightmare scenarios when delivering mirror cards from Zaxcom recorders. Is this real? What are the best practices to avoid this. I normally work on documentaries that roll extremely long takes. Should this effec…

Hi, which is it the smallest form factor stereo mic configuration I can use using diy omni mics to avoid phase cancellation problems in the theatre? I want to mount 2 diy omni mics in my Rycote blimp, but I need a suggestion about the stereo configuration (mics placement) focused on avoiding phase cancellation in theatres. Thx for you attention!

I want to be ahead of the rush... From a local news site: ‘Granny chic’: Are San Francisco Victorian speaking tubes making a comeback? [snip] “Why are we able to hear a great distance through a speaking tube?” the snippet reads before explaining the science: “When we speak into a tube, the sound waves cannot scatter, but must travel within the tube, and so we can hear at a much greater distance.” Relics of the speaking tube can still be found in old houses, including some of the many Victorians around San Francisco. In some cases, the tube has been removed, leaving a curious small hole in the wall where it once p…

Hi everyone maybe this should be discussed on « the post place » forum but I am not sure yet whether what I want do bring up is a technical, artistic or rather a commercial topic. I saw Dune, by Denis Villeneuve, in a rather bad 7.1 cinema theatre (difficult to get it in original version AND in dolby atmos here in Marseille). I was totally frustrated and above irritated by the overuse of the music. ok we know Hans Zimmer is not a light touch kind of music composer, but never before have I felt the heavyness of his music overcoming and overpowering everything I perceived in the film. Everything in the film made me want to love it but I found the cons…

Did a search, but found no discussions on the topic of sound thirds. Seems like every mixer has different things they expect and need. Interested in how others manage and think about the position. What do you want/expect? From my perspective, which is largely wanting to be a better, happier department head: I most enjoy working with 3rds who don't want or need to be micromanaged. If I'm micromanaging, something's wrong. Despite what I need or expect, I look for strengths and areas of interest in which to direct their time & attention. If you're happy & fulfilled, I'm happier & more fulfilled. While there are no stupid questions, I find that new team membe…

For the last several years I've been navigating the interesting waters of antique clock and watch collecting, restoration, research and writing. But I think that the time has come back for me to get back to my earlier passion, tape recording and in particular, the Nagra's. I've been wanting for some time to try my hand at writing a piece on the early years of Nagra, say the first 2 decades, up to the launch of the 4.2 and IV-S. The fact that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the production of the Nagra I, encourages me to embark on this now. As a labor of love, and out of respect for Stefan and his early collaborators. Last year I created…

Hello, I am curious to know why in many Hollywood movies the video assist person is credited alongside the sound team? I even saw it listed in the sound department in several templates of film production budget software. Anyone could explain? (In France the video assist is and has always been part of the camera department hence my curiosity). Thanks Fred

My father shot this piece with Neil Young talking about analog sound, digital sound, and his approach to creating and recording music. Quite a unique perspective, pretty far out there ---- but hey, it's Neil Young!

having recorded it, not ''really'' listening... i find it now a bit ''trancey'' i have now retired. i have recorded from abba to zz top and even performed with both from my dear, dear , missed friend bowie to orchestral beethoven at least, for me; music is as i like and ''too hell'' with ''in a monastery garden'' that i grew up with holding a thorn in between my teeth to get stereo from my 78's!

Hi everyone, When interacting in English, I have always been using the term "Sound recordist" for my job and I realised that many here use the other term "Sound Mixer" (sometimes with the added Location on both). I know they pretty much mean the same thing, but do they really in the industry? Who and why choose one over the other? Thanks warm regards Fred

Hey Guys, So a few years ago I did Thomas Popp's lav mic course, and learnt a huge amount about lav mic's (thanks Tom!). I was wondering if anyone knew of anything similar for learning the dark art of radio systems? I'd really like to build a comprehensive understanding of how radio waves work, and the science behind different antennas, different RF systems etc... Does anybody know of anything? Maybe a video course, or a book? @LarryF, you're like the god of this stuff, any suggestions? Thanks Chris FYI, I'm currently using Sennheiser G4's, and looking to upgrade and expand to a stronger rig, but want…

Directed by three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “They Shall Not Grow Old”), “The Beatles: Get Back” takes audiences back in time to the band’s January 1969 recording sessions, which became a pivotal moment in music history. The docuseries showcases The Beatles’ creative process as they attempt to write 14 new songs in preparation for their first live concert in over two years. Faced with a nearly impossible deadline, the strong bonds of friendship shared by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are put to the test. The docuseries is compiled from nearly 60 hours …
