This is Charlie, aka The Moose. He is a bog standard tabby but he is still a good looking cat in my opinion! Unfortunately we had to leave him back in New Zealand when my Mrs and I decided to shift back to London, he is now happily living with a friend on Aucklands North Shore. I miss him! [img alt=photo width=640 height=426] What you got?!

Hey all, Is anyone using a Yamaha QL1 for production audio recording? Do you use one in a studio setting? I don't feel like I'm getting the full potential out of this thing. I have specific questions but want to get general input on if anyone uses it and if they like it. Thanks everyone!

"Posted to You Tube on Jan 31, 2021" "Over eighty years ago the most spectacular treasure ever found in Britain was uncovered at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk - the golden royal regalia of the first kings of England, and the ship in which a monarch was buried in AD 630. But who built the ship, where and why? In the 80s the BBC made a two part documentary about Sutton Hoo produced by Ray Sutcliffe. The first part largely is made up of the the 1965 documentary The Million Pound Grave - on the excavation in 1939 of a site at Sutton Hoo which revealed half of a seventh century Anglo Saxon warship filled with treasure. Written and produced by Paul Johnstone, and using tele…

Any news on the release of the Deity BP TRX? Are their issues with manufacturing or technical issues? It would be nice to have an update on the status of the BP TRX. Thank you.

Yesterday, along with Chris Howland and the LA Sound Mixers, I hosted a seminar called The Unscripted Sound. In it, we discussed what goes into recording audio for reality tv shows, and the differences between scripted and unscripted mixing. You can watch the recording of it here (even without a facebook account): https://www.facebook.com/LASoundMixers/videos/886368908570884/ And of course, you all know I love talking all things audio. If anyone has any questions, or want to talk one on one, please reach out and we can discuss it further! Thanks!

Hi! I’m a sound for film student at FAMU in Prague. I’m writing my dissertation on how wireless microphones expanded possibilities for film making and am particularly interested in the period from around 1965 to 1975, when the technology first started being implemented. I have read George Groves’ account of first using wireless microphones in My Fair Lady and Ed Tise’s article about using wireless mics during the production of Full Metal Jacket, but would really appreciate more information about that period in sound recording. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, and if any of you who have experienced this era would like to speak with me through a quick online …

With masks going to be a continuing necessity on set (for good reason) for the foreseeable future, just curious if anyone out there has found a really comfortable, reusable cloth mask. Bonus points if it doesn't fog up sunglasses as that's been the dilemma with my current batch. I'd like to avoid any of those "filter" masks as everyone that has shown up to set with those has been handed a paper surgical mask by the COVID compliance officer as that's a no go in terms of safety for others. P.S. Stay safe out there everyone!

I'm a mixer in California and I'm moving back to Europe to be closer to my partner who's in school in Berlin. I previously lived in Berlin, but mostly worked in the live music world and didn't do much production sound at the time. I was wondering what the landscape is like where you live. What are good markets in the eu? I'm considering Berlin, Scandanavia, Dublin, or Madrid (as I speak Spanish). I'm considering the UK as well, but as I only have an EU passport it might be trickier. From what I know, wages seem to be a lot lower and it's more competitive. I'm still pretty young and not hugely concerned with making less than Los Angeles rates. What kind of gigs do people h…

EV's are obviously the future and many automakers (traditional and newcomers) are rushing to get electrified vans out into the market. A company called Canoo has a platform that is supposed to be able to be upfitted into anything you pretty much want it to be. Future ultimate sound van? They have yet to deliver a single product to the marketplace yet so TBD but thought it was interesting, especially with the integrated ramp etc.

I’m a novice......but......I have a question. I need to record my voice while I drive my car. I will be narrating the drive in real time. Pointing out landmarks, naming roads, and things of that nature as I drive. Video is not something that will be in vehicle so a mic can be mounted anywhere as long as it doesn’t interfere with driving. The goal would be to get the best possible voice audio into a recorder such as a Sound Devices MixPre-3 II while keeping road noise to a minimum. I need to get recommendations on what type of microphone to use. Shotgun, lav, etc. I can mount it anywhere but a good/easy place would be the sun visor. Any recommendations on a mic i…

Hey all, I've been to this forum often over the past few years. I'm a sound mixer working in Canada. I'm reaching out with an admittedly odd request but one of significant personal importance. I would be extremely grateful if I could be put in touch with a small handful of some of the more experienced sound mixers working in the North American film and television industry today. To simplify a longer story, I was involved in a car accident three years ago while riding my bike. This was very early in my career and while I have recovered to a certain point and am able to work, there is a significant limit to my physical abilities as a result. I …

I'm going to be recording sounds outdoors for months at a time and have a recorder in a waterproof box, but my mic will be outdoors outdoors and I need a way to get the 3 pin XLR cable into the box and keep it water proof. I’m looking at XLR bulk connectors similar to the attached picture. In terms of audio quality, are all bulkheads or connectors created equal, or is anything from Amphenol going to work well in terms of quality? Lastly, if anyone has a suggestion on a waterproof bulkhead male/female XLR connectors that are waterproof-ish and won’t cause any audio issues I'd love to head it

Mank

I watched 'Mank' recently and the sound threw me off a bit. Most of the dialog sounded like it had some reverb that didn't match the visual setting. Then this morning I read a snippet from Ren Klyce that they had added that ambience to mimic what an audience in a 1940's movie house would have experienced at the time. While I understand what they were shooting for, in the moment it took me out of the story a little bit.

Hey Fellow Sound People. I own a small rental house in the Dominican Republic and even though things slowed down alot this year, we have been able to turn a small profit. I want to make some sort of branded christmas gift to the guys that rent regularly from us to thank them for their support. I was hoping to get some ideas from the people here. I would love for it to be something usefull on set and hopefully soemthing I can get our logo on. Some of the ideas I have are the following: One of those caps that have sun protection for neck. Expendables pouch with basic expendables in it. Small adapter kit with some basic ada…

Gain staging
by Erob- 3 replies

Recently I’ve been on a few gigs and have noticed some issues with my lectro wireless in terms of gain staging. There is a very high probability it’s something I’ve done wrong, so please let me know if I’ve overlooked something. I’m having issues with my SSM’s and SRc’s in terms of gain staging, it sounds like I’m overloading at some stage. I have them plugged into my 833 and during the recordings it’s not peaking there. But it sounds slightly distorted (like it’s peaking), I have the mixer gain down as far as it will go (12 dB) and the transmitter as well (-7). After a little while of trying a few different things I brought the output of the SRc down from +5, t…
