Chadwell (Chad) O’Connor, founder of OConnor Engineering, was an inventor, steam engine enthusiast, and is most remembered as the inventor of the fluid-damped camera head, an achievement for which he won an Academy Award in 1992. O’Connor’s early home environment in his native Boston likely contributed to his active mind. Johnson O’Connor, his father, was a well-known psychometrician and pioneer in the study of aptitude testing. His mother died while he was young, and his father remarried MIT-trained architect and educator Eleanor Manning. The young O’Connor acqui…

The future of lav'ing 1 2 3

I am curious to know what has changed with some of you out there still working during these times. It seems apparent that boom(s) only might be the standard moving forward and lav's may be used only when necessary, and even then, must be somehow sterile and applied without sound mixer personal space invasion. I could be totally wrong. Local production companies here are collectively working on safe set protocols for the future work to come. Sound/Makeup/wardrobe are on the front lines among others. Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere already. I feel the recent major investments I made in the sleekest lav'ing technology may be grossly underutilized for the next 6 to…

Very interesting read about how scientists explored and recreated the unique acoustics of Stonehenge. This first article is the broad strokes: https://www.sciencenews.org/article/stonehenge-acoustics-sounds-voices-music For those that want a deep dive into the details, here’s the actual findings report: (It’s a little dry, but the specs are there. It‘ll be fun to recreate the effects in my comp— I’ll get to it one of these days....) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0305440320301394 Cheers, Evan

Hey guys, Newbie here. I am a non pro that got into sound because a friend wasn’t technical at all. I work I’m IT, so love anything technical/electrical and jumped at the opportunity to learn/do something new. Fast forward almost a year later, and I have a modest little sound kit and am hooked! So here’s my question. How would I go about getting some real world experience and maybe actually making a few $$$ in the process? I have zero set/pro experience and am dying to get my feet wet. Any suggestions will be much appreciated!!!

I'm re-watching the mentalist. Great show.. miss it.. Just noticed Daniel P. Church, perhaps in the background? Purposely in the shot? Funny. -Richard

Wandered off to the odd side of youtube, found this quite interesting. Maybe someone here will too. Wonder if post can soon do ADR without the real actors. Or to repair lets say, just a word.

Watching the new Fargo. Love the show, but I’ve noticed in episode five background ambience is all over the place. Is it just me?

I've been using multipe standard 4 bank chargers for years - energizer, duracell, etc. but I often see discussions from others here mentioning various results of measuring charges of aa's with fancier sounding chargers that also charge more than 4 batts at a time. Can anyone recommend? -Ken

How often do you stick hidden lavs to skin vs to clothing? (assuming that the chest isn't hairy) 1 2

I feel that sticking to skin is less risky, is somewhat more secure, won't move around with the clothing, and much less likely to be seen my camera (always a concern for me) On the flip side.... some actors might not like the temporary pain from pulling the tape off them at the end of the day. (and of course if you use weak tape that easily comes off, you constantly have to be on guard to be jump in to mess around fixing a loose lav) Even if they might not complain in the moment, or say "it is no big deal", you can't but help wonder if secretly they're hating you for you and might bad mouth you in the future? Which then comes back to bite you in being overlooked for fu…

Dear all, I recently watched "Barton Fink" (Coen Brothers-1991), pretty much by accident : I found a box of old DVD's on the street a few months ago and I'm watching them one by one without looking up what they're about beforehand. 2 min into the film I smiled a broad smile and thought "wow, this is why I love sound in film". Not very surprisingly, the sound supervisor was none other than Skip Lievsay. I thought of the following : I would like to start a thread which compiles a list of great-sounding films/series/can even be specific scenes. This could be for whatever reason : technical, artistic, because the dialog sounds so perfect, because…

Ahoy sound colleagues! Been utilizing the expertise on here for quite a while but this is my first post/query. Have a short coming up in a week, and l am on the hunt for any clever hacks on capturing super clean dialogue amidst all the varied crackling of log burning fires. So far, coming at this from one two potential solutions: A) Camera dept. cheats the "flames" and completely fakes it, i.e. no real flames = completely clean dialogue, or We shoot with live flames in the fireplace and bonfire, and I endeavor close directional booming with lower gain levels. Of course if there is another solution here I am missing, totally o…

Greetings, denizens of JWSound Some background: (may be a bit long-winded but context is a good thing I hope) I'm a sound-engineering diploma graduate (not that the qualification really counts for much), aspiring to build a career in either location or post, though I know I'll likely end up focusing on one discipline and dabbling in the other. I don't have any post work experience, but have invested in basic home studio gear and software and am teaching myself in my spare time at home when I can (really just basics & personal/friends projects thus far). I started out after college in location sound, and was lucky enough to get onto a decent …

I’ve posted here a few times for advice on my audio recording requirements but trying to finalize the last parts of my audio setup. I purchased for testing and plan on using a Diety S-Mic 2 (a moisture resistant mic) with a foam windscreen connected to a preamp that’s fed into a remote motion activate camera and will be recording video. I will visit the site once a month to swap memory cards, but the setup will be deployed 365 days a year..so wind, rain, snow, heat, etc. The camera and preamp will be in a waterproof case but the mic will be outside in the elements. A microphone technical support agent suggested that I need to create something that stops the mic and w…

Hi folks Just received a contract for a film I'm working on. There has been an agreed amount for daily equipment rental and consumables but there is no mention of this in the actual contract, only basic pay. Should it be in there? Thanks

Hi folks. I've recently been cold-contacted by someone who found a long-forgotten listing of mine on Media Match. This person is working for a production company in Europe, looking to produce something in the U.S. The position is slightly above my bread-and-butter level of production (which tend to be small and local to my home in New England) but the contact doesn't seem to mind. But something about it is making my radar blip a bit, although I can't put my finger on it. It could be the language barrier (the e-mail has very obviously been either auto-translated or very poorly translated by someone whose first language isn't English). The details of the product…

Hi all, I'm new to this forum so apologies if this is in the wrong section.. I've recently left my staff job where I was a sound assistant for 3 and a half years in the outside broadcasting industry. Pretty bad timing with the pandemic, but it is what it is. My primary trade going into the freelance market will be working on OB's, but I've always been really interested in getting my foot in the door with the sound recordist role, and being self employed seems like the best way to get about this as I can take up on opportunities without being tied to my previous, very sporadic rota. Just hoping to find out how others got their foot in the…
