Hi everyone, i find myself with two similar jobs coming up that i would like some advice on. i recently did a show; it was a choir competition. There were three judges, a presenter and then different choirs came on and sang. The judges and the presenter were wired with lavs (two hard wired and two wireless) and i had two schoeps cmc mk41 in a stereo pair for the choirs. all channels came into my allen and heath desk and recorded onto a 788t. it was one of those days where everything sounded great. so we are moving onto the final of the show but there will be a difference this time. an audience. my concern now is that the audience will have to hear what the judges a…

I was asked by a Director friend of mine to see if I could help some of his friends discover what is happening in their immediate neighborhood. In June this year, they started getting extremely low frequency sound getting into their wooden house. The effect is that they can't sleep at night as it is at its loudest then. When they put their heads down on the pillows there's a constant but with slight variations, very deep rumble that goes most of the night. They suspect that a battery recycling and disposal factory about half a mile away have installed some new equipment that is causing this. The factory has been there for years and has some bad environmental history. Als…

Was it me or did that movie seem like some of the sync was a little off? Also there was some ADR that did not seem natural. I don't know if I was just listening to hard or what but a lot of that did not seem natural and there where parts that seemed off. It really bugged me while watching the movie. Also the camera guy was doing crazy stuff. What did you think of that? Nicole

For some years I have been archiving performances by singer songwriters here in Thunder Bay with the PDAudio system in 2496. I became aware of the limitations of the system and have 'upgraded' but I still want to capture 'live ambiance' and have a 'forgiving' system in live concert situations(mainly acoustic choral in churches). I now have the Soundfield SPS 200-sb computer controlled mics and the Sounddevices 788T-ssd (and am starting to record). But I do not have software for the Soundfield Surround software(I have been using Soundforge 10 for my stereo recordings). I have been able to listen both in the 788t and in Soundforge 10. But I want to do more. Any suggest…

Thought you might enjoy this read. Socialism vs. Capitalism: Which is the Moral System C. Bradley Thompson Throughout history there have been two basic forms of social organization: collectivism and individualism. In the twentieth-century collectivism has taken many forms: socialism, fascism, nazism, welfare-statism and communism are its more notable variations. The only social system commensurate with individualism is laissez-faire capitalism. The extraordinary level of material prosperity achieved by the capitalist system over the course of the last two-hundred years is a matter of historical record. But very few people are willing to defend capitalism …

OK, here we go... I am possibly shooting a doc onboard a nuclear submarine later next month. Does anyone here have any sub experience? Besides no headroom and probably a lot of RF issues (great...) any other caveats? Thanks -Jason

How do you generally charge your client? Right now I offer a Daily Rate with equipment included but started thinking about charging for my services and equipment. Just wanted some insight on what you guys thought. Let me know. Thanks Nicole p.s. A guy who is a DP on a project I worked on he charged the lady for his services and every piece of equipment he brought on set even the extension cords. I was like WOW...Its wow to me cause I"m so young and new to the industry but for others its probably normal.

So here's the job I have next week, for which I'm trying to develop my plan. Corporate, for in-house projection at a meeting. The shot: Main actor wanders thru office "cubicle-land", engaging in dialog with 6 supporting cast along the way, one at a time. Steadicam, all in one shot (~2.5 min)... director wants to be able to hear the supporting cast as we drift toward and away from each of them... audio directly to camera; no syncing later... I'll most likely be working alone. Thought about cart-based + boom op, but we might cover too much distance for a stationary cart to be practical. It's questionable if a boom could get it done, because of the need for drif…

Today I met with a producer about his upcoming project. We talked about many aspects of the gig, including the one INT driving car scene that has 2 lines by one character. He said I'd either be on the insert car or in the trunk. I assumed he was joking about the trunk, and I said I ain't riding in any car being driven by an actor. He got slightly fiery and mentioned that he had 30 years in the business, a fact I was to be continually reminded of thereafter. I didn't back down and was real nice about it but strove to make the point that in the past, I had successfully rigged several cars and left the deck on board, including a scene with two free driven cars with fi…

Hello, It's been a long time that I wanted to know what's the level output that other sound engineers use to feed their headphones and why. And since I'm in this great group now, I can find out. I'm setting mine in a low level that I can hear clearly the dialogue. During the rehearsal I raise the level to make sure that nothing weird is happening and then I go down again. I would dare to say that this matter is also related to Mr. Wexler's topic "Petition to END LONG HOURS". Best regards, Marco

I'm just curious to hear other's ideas/stories on appropriate times to use, or past uses of, distortion or over-modulation on production tracks. I had a situation that came up today that got me thinking back to a past experience. Typically, I do sound utility, but today I was asked to break away to splinter-unit and use my boss's gear to "grab" a few takes of a news reporter doing a "breaking news" report on a beach. The reporter points to some bizzare meteors in the sky, and then the meteoric action gets too close for comfort. Everyone including the news crew drops what they are doing, and runs from the danger. It was shot from the POV of the news camera-man's P…

Does anyone have any experience hiding lavs on Grizzly looking, long haired, big bearded, duck call neckless, heavy jacket wearing, duck hunters? I am doing this show where booming is really not an option. I have had some success hiding lavs in brim of hats but sometimes theres still a ton of clothing noise when they rub the hat or want to take it off to scratch their hair. I am really looking for a way to hide a mic somewhere on the body and not get any clothing noise. Using B6. Unfortunately there is no button holes to stick the mike out of, all zippers. Also is there a way to maybe set the gain structure so that the mic becomes less sensitive to clothing noise? (That m…

Hi all, I was just reading the headphone level thread and for some reason this triggered a question in my head (well, many questions are always floating in my head, may be this one just floated to the top). Do you ever participate in the post-sound process? I recorded a feature earlier this year and am participating in the post process with it and I'm finding it enlightening. Things we worried about during the shoot being a non-issue, and things that weren't heard on set that have created a problem, ADR, foley, etc. Just curious to see how often others sit in or participate in post. Thanks! Phil

Ok, been a long time resident of LA here, and I've always considered Vegas Nevada as our playground. I haven't been there in a few years, and I went last weekend, due to some 'out of state' guest staying at my house, and we thought it would be a good trip. Holly crap does Vegas suck now, or what! - Hotel wouldn't let us check in, claiming that hotel check-in was at 5pm. We made a stink about it, and they said we can get you in on another floor?? Ok.. I don't have a floor preference. - Couldn't find normal slot machines, and instead its been taken over my tons of other theme type games (mostly bad movie themes, like JAWS or ET). It takes 20 minutes to learn how t…

Figured it's worth making this a different thread. I had Remote Audio (part of Trew Audio) build me a specialized cable to go from my Yamaha AES I/O to the Deva AES I/O. This fits securely and has not been any problem so far. The supplied interface cables from Zaxcom have cheap (China?) DB connectors and should have thumbscrews. On the Aviom patchbay, I have the version with a DB-25 connector on the backside and use a Zaolla DB-25 to XLR pig tails. http://www.zaolla.com/pdf/Zaolla_RetailCatalog_Oct08.pdf (Sorry got the pictures reversed) RL

Yesterday there was a get together of over 30 women (not all women "over 30" by any means) working professionals in sound. I know a lot of these women but there are also many I do not know. The question has been asked before, I think originally by Crew, why we have so few women here? Pictured below (but possibly not in the right order): In this photo: Jessica Bender, Tula Snoeck, Lydia Hollyfield, Christina Huynh, Theresa Radka, Kim Petty, Elizabeth Alvarez, Tanya Peel (photos), Linda Murphy, Alexandra Gallo, Sara Glaser Evans (photos), Lisa Pinero, Lisa Pinero (photos), Patrushkha Mierzwa, Mary Jo Devenney, Shawn Holden (photos), Alenka Pavlin, Carrie Sheldon, Anna D…

I'm a little confused but just curious. What person/company would one use if they wanted to join the union as a boom op or sound utility person in the atlanta, ga area? Just want to learn as much as possible about it. I have been researching but everything is coming up with LA stuff. Help me please. Thanks Nicole

Hi all Yesterday on a job while mixing and booming with a MKH50 I suddenly started to pick up RF interference on my boom channel. At first I thought it may be the "camwave" video tx on the back of the camera but after turning that off and moving the boom around I narrowed the source down to being one of my Lectro UM400 Block 24 Tx's that I was using to link to the camera. As soon as I brought the mic, or boom or the coily boom cable within a foot or 2 of that particular Tx, I got a fizzing sound. I changed freq on that Tx and the problem then went away completely. Has anyone experienced this or can anyone offer an explanation? Thanks, Jon Chiles

Well.. this year I've seen my record share of Doritos gigs this year. The grand prize for the winning gig is up to 3 million now, so it's spawned a record number of would be film makers. I've turned a whole lot of them down, but here's one I did that was pretty interesting. http://banglabs.com/videos/?v=Doritos_Spot_1 More of them to come. -Richard
