You folks using PTLE for playback--have you found a way to get TC out of the app other than having an audio track w/ TC on it? I THINK that this isn't possible, or maybe you have an MTC>>LTC convertor? Philip Perkins

I just created this 10 commandments for new filmmakers.. I know we can go round and round with a lot of micro stuff, but I wanted to generalize as much as possible. But, perhaps we can take it to 15 or 20 commandments. what do you think? 1) Thou shall not mislead thyself. Creating Movies Cost money. What-ever book you read that told you about making no money movies is complete Bulls#!t for sale to idiots who want to believe this.. If you don't have the money, then go raise the F*$#ing money like your suppose to do!! Don't hit your crew for the cost of your film. Don't start calling crew people, and demanding they don't get paid because you are not.. Don't sta…

Great Caesar's Ghost !!! 5 days total time logged in. That's 120 hours (as if you didn't know that). What with jwsound discussion group, ramps for more than 11 years, cinemasound, and my new best friend Aussie Sound, it's a wonder I have time for work, let alone a life. I hope my wife never sees these statistics. The tragedy is, I enjoy it all. With the wonders of modern communication and these great discussion groups, we Aussies never need feel isolated from the global sound community. I have a feeling that someone will chime in with tenfold the hours spent online that I have !! Best wishes, David.

I was just asked by a producer how to credit me on a doc I mixed. I mixed it totally run and gun ENG style, and it was the first project I was on from start to finish in this capacity. It was an independently financed doc that the producer is trying to sell on the open market. So, what I'm asking is: What is the proper screen credit given the project and the style in which I worked? Location Sound Mixer? Sound Recordist? I don't want to undersell or over sell myself, nor do I want to misrepresent. Your (collective) input in this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marc Hoppe

I regularly have these terrible dreams. You could say nightmares that you live through. Most recently a dream that when I awoke I felt exhausted. I was recording on a Nagra without a perspex top or case or strap. I was on a set of young teenagers and it was chaos. The 1stAD did not want to bothered by blocks or rehearsals. The camera shot regardless of me joining in. Am I losing my marbles or do we all suffer from this??? Fond regards to all with dreams and sleepless nights Mike

Through the life of George Groves. This website is a great homage. It covers the first sync sound to the first wireless use in film(My Fair Lady) and beyond. I was captivated and could not stop reading Www.georgegroves.org.uk

Got involved in the early stages of a short film with a clever young director. "What about quadraphonic recording he asked. So with my Sanken CSS-5 and a couple of AKG C460/CK61 cardiodes mounted on a mike stand we did a test. I realised it would not cover dialogue at all but as a scene setter with (later) actors on wires we shot a test by a freeway and in a park using a small video camera. (all into my HHB Portadrive) A`week later we took the material to a local audio post place and screened it. I had a chance to view it with the post mixer before my director and producer arrived. Gee! absolutely amazing even if the mikes panned with the camera!!…

Hey guys, I've got a question about theater mics. Theater is not really my skill set so anyone who has done this kinda thing, I'm open to suggestions. My son's elementary school play is coming up in a few months and I got "volunteered" to do all the sound for the show. This entails hitting all the music and sound effect cues, (never done it for a play, but I'm confident enough that I can handle that), recording the performance (easy enough), and providing a PA set up (no brainer). What I'm looking for advice on is how to hear 20-30 kids aged 6-12 as they put on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Apparently last year (we were not at the school then) they tried…

Oh, Peter Weir is coming to India to shoot in the great hills of North-Eastern India just a few days for his film "The Way Back" and the Indian production controller has taken my latest resume and sent it to the production. It may be just two days of shoot, but it will be a great honour to work with Mr. Weir. Also, what will be incredible is that Mr. Ed Harris - an artist I really admire will probably be there since he is doing a role in the film. I fervently wish this little but GREAT gig actually happens for me. I am a great lover of his film 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. I saw this film on black and white TV in 1988 i think. It left a lasting impression on me. I saw th…

Just saw Star Trek last night. I loved it. Everything a hardcore Trek fan would love plus a great modernization of the franchise to get new fans hooked. Phil Palmer and Peter J Devlin (the two names I picked out of the credits, my apologies if I missed any others) my hats off to you for a great job. A great sign to me as to how good a job you guys did, was the fact that after 15 minutes into the film, I stopped "listening" and just enjoyed the film going experience. I especially liked the use of the classic sound fx added in post. I would have to say as a long time Trek fan, working on anything in the Trek series would be the pinnacle for me. Congrats to you b…

In general, I hate movies that span a lifetime because they make life seam like it is way too short to be summed up in a 2 hour movie. But, I have to give praise to this little short, on so many levels. http://vimeo.com/4626809 It sums it up in 47 seconds, and notice the beats.. Indicating of course how each progressive milestone seams like it's faster and faster. I've identified all the milestones, but a few, such as the dog, I don't get.. Also, it looks like it was filmed on a Canon SLR camera with a fish eye lens too. -Richard

I keep thinking that I've seen it all on film sets.. But each day that I'm on a set, is yet another experience. Saturday I'm on a film set in Escondido, CA. in a gated housing track. We're filming a scene where as an actor drives up to a house and meets another actor coming out from the house. After several takes, we notice this kid (about 18or so) that keeps driving past the set in front with his golf cart. Each time we have to wait for him to pass, and it becomes pretty obvious that he has nothing else better to do, then keep interrupting the film shoot. Not much we can do, because we are in a working neighborhood and we can't block the street, so we just try and…

I've been asked to teach at the Film and Television Workshops this summer and I would love to hear what you guys think would be good information to impart to students, other than the obvious ones of technique, equipment use etc. Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys Mick

Well, I'm at one of those decision points again, trying to decide whether to fix my old van or junk it and move on. My location sound work is almost all drive-to in my own vehicle, so the vehicle has a big part in the choice of gear and how it is set up to work. The timing of this kind of sucks re money, so I'm looking at used and wondering what I really need anymore. Two cheap possibilities are a pickup truck w/ a shell (safer re getting killed by your gear in an accident, but not great mileage, not ultra secure and then there's the "reaching in" thing) or a Scion XB (good car, but I don't know if I can get everything in even stacked up). I've had a van my whole adul…

Hi All Deva 5, Running 5.40, Panasonic DVD Rams. On Wednesday I was recording a Commercial for "STARBURST" sweets, on the banks of the beautiful Loch Fyne at a Dunderave Castle in Scotland. 5 Tracks, 24 Bit, 48K. Our day started at 05.00 to travel to location from Glasgow for a 07.00 Breakfast, 07.30 on set. The Script did not look too demanding, however as you know Commercials shoot at times lots of material, so halfway through the day at Segment 99 (approx 4gig) I was beginning to think about changing to my 2nd DVD Ram, I ejected the first then decided to get maybe another 5-10 segments onto it, once re-inserted the DVD Ram would not mount, I was getting the mes…

I have tried many times to find these little inserts that thread onto your shockmount, then drop into the hole at the end of the older Vdb boom poles. I called Vdb a few times to no avail.... If anyone has 2 of them I could buy I would be happy to do so... I THINK they are 16mm but they seem a hair bigger... I am on set and nobody has a mm measuring tape.... Let me know, Thanks... Bob

I know I'm a little behind on this, but does anyone have any feelings about the Disability Insurance offered by EP (Payroll)? We're automatically enrolled in it unless we opt out. On paper it looks pretty good - maybe marginally better - but what is really going on here? Thanks! ---steve nelson
