There has been a lively discussion, mostly on r.a.m.p.s., about wireless fishpole work. Much of the discussions have taken as a starting point the new Zaxcom TRX 992 boom box (we all know what that is) but have talked about other ways of accomplishing some of the same things without the 992. Lots of people have provided descriptions of how they haver been booming, wirelessly, over the years, usually some combination of Lectrosonic transmitter, Denecke power supply, Lectro or Comtek IFB, etc., understanding, hopefully, that the TRX 992 provides features that are not even available with the other systems. One thing that was brought up, and this is actually my question, i…

So taking a rest in the hotel between Graceland and Sun Records. Thought I'd share... Well I seem to be in good company these days. I had a pretty good connection with a film starting up this month...they hired Dave MacMillan. What are you gonna do? Then got another great referral to a tier 3 low budget job, 30 day schedule, less money, etc. The supervisor called me and discussed rates and terms of low budget agreement, checked my availability, etc. Just found out the job went to Willie Burton. And STILL what are you gonna do? Although I don't expect to get hired for a job over one of these guys, I don't really expect to be competing for the same jobs either. …

First a caution...Geek factor is rather high on this one. In celebration of the "100 Hours of Astronomy, April 2 - 5" here is a link for the audio folks in the room. They hooked up the output of the Lovell radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, Manchester UK and recorded some very interesting sounds. This is their "jodcast" with two of their resident radio astronomers. I enjoyed it... http://tinyurl.com/c25nlz For more info on the 100 Hours of Astronomy. http://www.100hoursofastronomy.org/ pwp

Hey group, I'm curious about setups that people have found successful with live studio audiences, whether it's sitcom, or imrpov (Chappelle Show) type shows. I'm curious about how you capture audience laughter, within the show, and what you do to try and separate the laughter from the performances. Also, do you place speakers for the audience to be able to hear the performance better, and if so how do you make sure to have minimal bleed from speakers to audience mics. Just curious, I might be working with a setup like this soon, so I'm just wondering what the pitfalls are, so we can try and be prepared. Thanks everyone! Phil Rosati

Does anyone know what happened to Scott Farr? He just kind of disappeared from this Group without a trace. Vin contacted me today and was concerned, as I am now as well. -- B

Hello all RAMPers and JWSOUNDERS, I have managed to confirm what I suspected was the case. Dragonfly on Paradise has closed, so I need to know what the group wants to do. It seems that we could go back to Firefly's, but we were outgrowing them as I remember, and last year they were not wanting to really deal with us at all, and double booked the deck on us which is why we ended up at Dragonfly. So here is the question: Where does the group want to meet? I know Vegas pretty well, and can find a place, but would like feedback from everyone on what they want. Is location near the LVCC a higher consideration than food type / space/ drink specials etc etc. Or if a…

Just came back from watching Watchmen at the Arclight - fantastic film, managed to treat the source material with a lot of respect, and yet not take it too seriously. Just wanted to say that I thought that the sound was great, really excellent job all round, all involved - clear, clean and crisp.

Went and saw "Knowing" last night. Thought it was good.. First came the terrible plane crash. Ok.. Our hero rushes in, tries to save a few people.. people running around on fire.. those that survive, soon die in a horrific afterwards deaths from either debris, explosions, or more fire... Then comes the scenes on the rail car derailment. Jesus.. some pretty horrific death. No less then 300 people die by either getting decapitated, ran over, crushed, or what ever. Horrific scenes of the inside of the train as it mows people down.. It was super-realistic. The kind of realistic that goes well beyond entertinment, and makes you feel near sick. I even heard people 'ga…

So I've been experiencing some issues since upgrading to the newer 2.61 firmware for the 744t. It deals with TC and is a MAJOR issue. I have contacted Sound Devices and am still waiting for a reply. I am in EXT TC - AUTO REC mode, being fed TC from a record deck. Output of 744t TC out to a FF800 Audio input, for Boom Recorder. The TC on the deck tape and the TC in Boom Recorder are accurate and locked. However the TC on the 744t is off by 26.07 - 26.10 SECONDS early. This happens on 75% of the takes. I have the TC HOLD set to 3 seconds and preroll set to 2 seconds to help insure a steady code is coming before it rolls. I have the a 1 second preroll set for Boom Recorder. …

"I'm looking for an experienced sound person to teach me the features of a Sound Devices 442 field mixer. I have the mixer and need to learn how to properly use the limiter and other features. I would prefer if the person had actual experience with this particular mixer and is able to explain how to use all of the controls. I can pay $20/hour for this service. Please don't respond if you "sort of" know about sound mixing and know some of the controls, I've already done sound myself for some projects; I need someone that really understands all the features and how to use them. Thank you." I can teach him how to "properly" use the limiter and other features - All h…

I am working on a shoot tomorrow where everything just changed. We have dialog between 4 actors, one in a suit and tie, and 3 in bridesmaids dresses (noisy, presumably). After a bit of dialog, the 3 women break into a song and dance, which was initially going to be music playback and lip syncing (think 60's girl groups). Here's the wrinkle: the client hates the vocal track and wants the lead "lip syncer" to actually record the vocals live. We are shooting in a studio (approx. 40'x40') and recording a 2 channel mix to camera. They do not want to go the hard disk recorder route. I am primarily an ENG/over-the-shoulder- bag-type of mixer, so this falls slig…

Ok, I worked on my first large scale Reality TV show, and we just wrapped up. I won't name the show, because of a few reasons. But here are my highlights of things that I learned... - When they wanted to hire a sound team, they f*#@'d around for weeks trying to get someone to do it for their near no budget attempt. I was first pick because I live in the OC (close to the show location) and one of the most experienced sound people they interviewed. But they waited so frekin' long to hire me it was a sure miracle that I was able to gather up the equipment needed for the shoot. - We had production meeting after production meeting, all trying to figure out how t…

I am posting some food for thought on the heels of the ratification of our new I.A. contract. These comments from a very active and concerned member of the Camera Guild: What I don't fully understand in this corporate paradigm is how PEOPLE get away with immoral, nation-destroying, middle-class-killing policies by hiding behind The Corporation. Well, although it's been said that "corporations have no ethics, they are amoral entities," the fact is that corporations are run by PEOPLE. PEOPLE make these decisions. PEOPLE decide the fate of thousands. There is no such thing as a corporation bereft of the PEOPLE that run it and dictate its corporate policies. These …

Hey All, I'm considering a gig in Pakistan. It's a couple months off, but I'm wondering if anyone here has been there (recently is better, but at all is good too...). I've read all the state dept travel warnings, and watch the news and read- so I'm pretty well aware of the potential danger. Just looking for anyone with real, on the ground experience there that they'd like to share. Thanks in advance, Tom

Hello to all My name is Kris. I am a sound mixer / boom Op based out of Toronto. Recently I finished a 30 day job as a boom operator out in Ottawa. At the end of the show the mixer I was working with asked me to go back to the studio the next day to help him pack and go over all the gear we had used for the last month. I met him at the studio as we had agreed and went over everything and packed it all away in his van. He was right there with me the whole time making sure we had everything. 20 Days later I had another job with the same mixer. When I showed up for work he told me that one of the snakes we had used for the show in Ottawa was missing and that…

OK, so it's little off topic, but it does involve sound. When I'm not working or spending time with my family, I'm usually riding or wishing I was riding my mountain bike. I saw this video about Easton, who make high end wheels for mountain and road bikes. You can see how the technicians listen to the sound of the spokes to tell when it's true. Almost like tuning guitar strings. And by the way, you will notice they are using a Behringer mixer to listen to the sound....maybe I'll go double check my wheels ! LOL. http://www.thefutureschannel.com/dockets/realworld/building_testing_bike_wheels/

All, I stood up for myself today, something I think we all need to do from time to time. Today is the 60th day after I submitted my invoice to a DVD bonus features company I have worked for several times in 2008. 2009 looked like it would be a busy year with these guys too, but then we got this email: "So sorry about this. We do have your invoice in our payables system but are unable to pay it right now. As you are aware, the economy and the general state of the entertainment industry have caused the studios to slow down payment to us for the work we provided to them. This has caused us to sow down payments to our vendors like yourself. I wish I could tell you …

Just a general discussion thing, but, let's imagine that you are starting out on the path as a mixer today, what would be the first piece of equipment that you'd buy and why?
