I put up a little slide show that I made to honor the 40th Anniversary of "Medium Cool." Forty years ago! It still stands as an amazing achievement, making this movie in the midst of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, 1968. Not everyone knows that the movie was tightly scripted with fictional characters with one big plot opening: what is going to happen in Chicago during the convention. The police riot that ensued, tanks rolling down Michigan Avenue, Haskell being tear gassed while shooting the movie ("lookout Haskell, it's real"), none of this could have been predicted. I have to confess that, at my low level, I've yet to fully comprehend who all these producers are and what they do. Producer, Executive Producer, Associate Producer, Line Producer, Production Coordinator, UPM, etc. Any guidance would be most appreciated. A.

Ok, so I know this is a story about Canadian TV industry, but I know there are quite a few Canadians who post here, So I hope you will excuse this post. And I would love to hear everyone's opinion also. These tough economic times must be affecting everyone these days. Canadian Idol which is consistently a top ten show here in Canada, just announced it has decided to take 2009 off, due to fear about predicted lower advertising revenue. If such a highly rated show can become a victim of these economic times, what chance do lesser rated productions have ? And what does that say about the state of Canadian television ? I've worked on almost all the seasons of Canadian Idol…

A producer friend called me with a problem. It seems that water got into the storage facility where he was storing tapes and film and other articles associated with a project. He told me that the audio tapes had gotten quite damp. I don't know that they were ever actually submerged in water; rather I expect that they simply got wet as the humidity level in the storage facility went up. I asked if there was mold on the tapes and he said that he thought there might be but he hadn't opened the boxes to investigate. (Or, maybe he had only opened one or two boxes to sample) I would like to know if there is a procedure for dealing with water damaged tape or if there is a ser…

Due to the freak snow storm, I am stuck in Las Vegas. Have been here working for 6 days (which were scheduled) and tried to drive back to Los Angeles on Wednesday. I had turn back to stay over another night to see if interstate 15 will open.... Production did put me up in a room and will do so again tonight if necessary but what about per diem. Should I be receiving it for the additional days while stuck out here on location? pshap

I just watched this on youtube and thought, "How fun this would have been to do!" I'm sure the pay wasn't really the reason for doing this, but the locations were very interesting and the mix of people is amazing. As I was watching this I was trying to name all the mics in the shots and best of all no one was yelling, "BOOMS IN!!!!!" Just watch and listen:

Last night I was watching the episodic TV show The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I notice something very distracting. I sounded to me that all of the ambience in the outdoor scenes were “Gated. As soon as a character talked the ambience level would drop to where you couldn’t hear it and as soon as the character stopped talking the ambience would rise to normal level. It had this pumping effect that was really distracting. I guess to be able to control the level of the ambience it must have been added to the scene in post. Any thoughts on this? Andy

To All, I've noticed a lot of posts with issues regarding the RED's audio workflows. The solutions to most of these problems are much simpler than one might think. I'm happy to answer any questions about frame rates, timecode, jamsync, bit depth, or any other questions/concerns. Coffey Sound has taken an avid interest in the RED's audio compatibilities. We will be checking this message board daily to answer your questions. Or you can reach me at Coffey Sound. Thanks, Jonny Coffey Sound, Llc (323) 876-7525

Hello, I thought I will start a series of writings about working atmosphere in India. This is the first part. PACKAGE DEALS I was called to do this project (which I am currently on) and when I was asked my rates, i gave them a day rate and a figure for the post as sound designer. Later, they told me they could offer me a "little less" (about 15% less) and I said ok. But then i told them this was for 70 days of shoot, and if the shoot went on further, i would charge pro rata for each extra day. Out here, a day is 12 hours, believe it or not, and it does not include travel time to location. Within 30 days of shoot, "extended shifts" were called for and se…

I have a quick question about criticism in regards to 'our' position in the film industry. Specifically, criticism on a project that you may have worked on. Over the years I've seam to have found that criticism is a double edge sword. On one hand, I myself welcome criticism.. As a learning film maker myself, I find that I personally can always improve, and criticism from experts in the field can really come in handy for learning, and growing.. On the other hand, were talking art here. And criticism can be both a blow to ones ego, and looked at with some, as insult. Yes, I do understand that a 'maverick' film maker can bend the rules a bit, but not without knowing…

Howdy, Had a surreal encounter on set today. Outdoors in a public city park. Very small crew with no security. We had some kids come near us and at first all was OK but after a while they just felt the need to start cursing at us as loud as they could. It was extremely uncomfortable experience, I felt bad for the actors because they were facing this vocal shellacking and marshaled through it ok. I'm listening back to the tracks now and you can sense the increasing amount of angst in the crew.. Very strange day.. On an up note, it was my first day with my new Lectro SR with (2)SMa combo. Very nice!! I use a Hawkwoods adapter to power the SR, didn't have to worry about t…

So I was wondering if I'd ever work again (typical freelancer "whoa is me" mode) and then it hits, like a storm. First a threat of three days with HBO Real Sports, (I love working for these folks, always cool stories) then 4 confirmed days with Food Network Challenge (another show I like working on) and in the middle (weekend) of the 4 day gig is one day doing a Verizon ("Can you hear me now?") commercial at one of the local ski resorts. Well the HBO gig turned into a one day job at the beginning of this run, because the other days overlap the Challenge days and the HBO folks still haven't made their mids up which day(s) it will be, so I took the sure thing. But for th…

Yup, the topic says it all. I'm in a scenario where I'll be using 4 wireless and a boom for production sound, all recording into a 744T. How to approach? I'm already considering joining 2 wireless into a channel, where 2 of these talents are talking with a 3rd talent in-between the conversations. The shots are all crane/masters/and X-wide shots, not a whole lot of them but enough for me to require going wireless. Another option is to just use 2-3 wireless systems and compensate the 4th character by booming. Setup #1 SD302 + SD744T Setup #2 SD442 SD744T Setup #3 SD302 SD744T + 702T Setup #4 SD442 SD744T + 702T Confused? I am! Alan

Hi everybody. I just found this forum today, and I'm glad to have access to a place with all this interesting and valuable information. I'll briefly explain the situation so you know where I'm standing now. I finished school a couple months ago, an since then I've done a few jobs as a location mixer (all of them going from a mixer into camera). I've been thinking about buying a portable recorder, something like a Sound Devices or an Edirol; both of them offering 4 recording tracks. Looking through various sections of this forum I found out that there are many people using Laptops and Boom Recorder; a system that seems to be versatile and reliable. My questions…
