WARNING! Slow economy, too much time! Sort of “Who am Iâ€ Rant! This is sort of a rhetorical question. Is becoming a sound person (mixer) the top of the food chain or is it or can it be a stepping stone to bigger and better things? Another question is whether freelancing ever helps you get a better position or does working full time with a company gets you a better position? How high can you go in production? When does the glass ceiling show up? Some years ago, I wanted to be a photographer. I graduated at the time of big downsizing in both broadcasting and production. Most of the work was now being outsourced because the production companies didn’t have to pay…

Let's say we have a scene around a kitchen table where two guys are arguing. One eventually jumps up, pulls a gun, cocks it, and points it at the other's head. The most obvious sound effect to feature is the cocking of the gun. Ironically, the other prop I mentioned, the table, could supply an even more powerful sound. As our guy stands, maybe he shoves the table toward the other guy. The scrape of the table legs on the floor could be fashioned to screech danger more effectively than the gun because it comes from a place the audience doesn't expect. If the director can figure out that he wants to use this sound in this way it will influence building the sets, the blocking…

Question, How often do you use EQ while recording dialog on location? If you do, is it to enhance the dialog or more to cut out some unwanted frequency. Using a low cut filter doesn't count as most will use it to cut the low rumble. Thx

I am having a problem with floors. The set designer says the actual studio floor is not even enough so he has to build a platform and built the set on top of the platform. This platform is a wooden structure, frame and 1" ply PLUS 1/2 inch ply on top. Then comes the actual carpet. Any brisk walking on this surface makes a noise showing clearly that the floor is hollow. Other sets will have floor tiles instead of the carpet. The underlying structure will be the same platform. I am wondering what we can do to reduce this percussiveness and resulting hollow thumps from footsteps on this surface. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. -vin

Sorry if this topic has already been addressed, but I thought it might be a good idea to talk about distortion. There are a few production sound guys and gals out there who don't know enough about avoiding clipping when using microphones. One of the most common false assumptions is that the mic itself is the first thing in the circuit to clip... wrong. The mic preamp in the mixer or recorder is almost always where the distortion happens. And if your knob or fader is downstream from that preamp then turning it down is going to do nothing to fix the distortion. All you'll be doing is lowering the level of the signal and the distortion in equal amounts. To avoid distor…

Now that it seems that some form of good electronic sound reporting is available to everyone doing NL recording (even on semi pro recorders, via Wave Agent), how many folks are doing this on a regular basis? I understand (intimately...) that with some recorders the process is more labor intensive than with others, but I was wondering if your clients were now demanding PDF (or etc) reports, just liked them without demanding them, or are actively opposed (or don't care). Stories of actual usage welcome. Philip Perkins

I am doing a trailer for a feature and we are doing a shoot in a football stadium during a game. Was wondering what mic or mics to use for crowd noise? Stereo or Mono? All answers will be greatly appreciated as this is my first "real" sound job!! Thanks Jay

Lately I have been receiving about 10 "invites" a day --- so and so wants to add you as a friend --- and you are supposed to respond by identifying that you know the person. I do have a Facebook account but I never use it. All of the invites have in fact been from people whose names I do know but I can't believe everyone all at once is trying to add me as a friend. Is it possible someone got a hold of a list or something? Do we have any Facebook aficionados here who can explain this to me. Also, when trying to respond, I log in to my account but there is no reference to those who have issued the invite. - Jeff Wexler

Guys, help me out here... We have a little discussion going between some UK mixers about terminology. What are now the accepted titles for Sound crew members? On a Feature would you designate a crew as Prod.Sound Mixer,Boom Operator,Cableperson,Utility or are you moving to a similar system that the US (and increasingly UK)Camera Dept. has adopted where the focus-puller is the 1st.A.C,loader 2nd.AC etc ? So if the Prod.Mixer is the same status as the Camera Operator, would the Boom Op be the 1st Assistant Sound? Or would it be wrong to assume that these parallels are valid? your comments and clarification, please! Mutt n' Jeff

Just watched the Fox NFL pregame show for the first time in a long while this weekend. After a few minutes, I realized no one had a lav on--but they all had a shiny pin of some sort on their left (camera right) lapel. Wondering if anyone knows if they are using pin mics on this show or something else? Regardless, it sounded pretty good for TV. ---Matt

I'm looking for a SFX library to comprehensively cover a tank from the '40s or '50s, such as the Patton tank. I need all engine sounds, hydraulics, metal sounds, tracks, etc. All of the coverage I need is from an interior perspective. This can be a commercial SFX library or a personal collection that can be licensed. All help is greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Just wanted to say what a good job Jeff Pullman and his crew did on a very difficult film called "Rachels Getting Married". Loved the sound, hated the camera work, but the film was powerful and honest on most levels. I'm sure you have war stories. Also a shout out to Scott Harber and the work he did on "Religulous". Good work and you even looked like you knew what you were doing:). Both films worth your 10 $$$. I got my senior discount so I like them even better. CrewC

Just wondering if any of you guys would like to share any tips about recording dialogue in a moving vehicle. Tomorrow I shall be attempting just such a feat and so far convincing the powers that be to tow the vehicles is going well. I think they had planned to drive them. You will therefore all probably guess the level we are working to but I wouldn't mind knowing how it's done usually. Plus any other tips of course. All the Best Darren

A number of months ago, I was invited to do a 'sit-in' on the actors reading though their lines on a production meeting right before a shoot. Fortunately, I was able to get out of this, as I think thats it's a huge waste of my time, and I can't see where it serves any purpose to a "technical position" like sound. I think that the only thing that might be important is that if they want sound run to the camera, then how I'm going to interface with the camera is about the only thing that I need to know for preproduction meets. Beyond that, I can't stand to be in these production meets because, 99% of the time, nothing anyone talks about is sound related, unless we are l…

Hey guys, I just wanted to check to see if anyone knows when the October 52 meeting is? I passed the test and am on the ballot for the vote in October. I have been getting in touch with union members I know to ask them to attend the meeting, but everyone always asks me when it is. Unfortunately, I am not supposed to know the date of the meeting, which I understand. I would just like to be able to tell others when it is if they ask, to try and get them to attend. Thanks everyone! Phil Rosati (267)975-8439

Anyone have a spreadsheet that they use to track your time card times and calculates your pay? I'm on a Warner show and they're notorious for screwing up paychecks. I'm tired of double checking them by hand. Thanks, Ken

I expect some people will be angry I am using this forum to voice a political opinion, and I am sorry for that, but I really feel that I cannot be silent about this issue. I saw people with their CHILDREN holding signs yesterday, and I feel I must act on my own in any way I can. Robert Sharman - THIS TOPIC HAS BEEN MOVED - (Society, Politics and the Planet)

Okay I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I still don't have an answer. If you have a scene with a scripted overlap, or else the actors improv or their delivery overlaps, is it okay if you've got everyone on-mic? Obviously in a wide shot you want them to overlap since they're all on screen, but in a clean or dirty single is it okay? I'm only talking if you are able to get them both on a good, on-axis sounding track. I've placed Sankens on the outside of clothes in the sweet spot (center chest) for off-screen lines that may overlap, or even better a second boom for the off-screen lines. I figure it's okay to let actors overlap as long as I have them bot…
